If They Don't Know, Is It the Kid's Fault or Is It Yours?
Another thing that has me puzzled is the following comment: "These kids today don't know good music." Let's think about that a moment. We all came up in different eras of wonderful music. I'm a 70s/80s kid for example, grew up on AM radio (thanks to my great-grandmother who wasn't a fan of FM radio) to artists such as The Carpenters, Leo Sayer, Gordon Lightfoot, Led Zeppelin, and Rod Stewart. Soul legends such as The Chi-Lites, The Impressions, Donny Hathaway, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, and numerous Motown, PIR, and Stax artists were also heard in my house as well as jazz by Esther Phillips, Hubert Laws, and Chuck Mangione (thanks to my mother). Not to mention my family's tradition of Soca/Calypso music and the Reggae music most often heard in the streets sound systems during the late 70s/early 80s. However, my older brother and I were into the Pop music at the time: Madonna, Prince, and Michael Jackson were mega large in the 80s. Also we included the New Wave/British Invasion acts to our record collection such as Art of Noise, Duran Duran, INXS, George Michael/Wham, Culture Club, and a reggae group from Birmingham UK, UB40. The mid-late 80s/90s brought in my love of Hip-Hop thanks to my youngest brother. Artists such as LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Salt N Pepa, Tupac, Notorious BIG, and many others added to our collection. So in essence, we knew the great music our parents/grandparents played in the house...in fact I used to "borrow" my mother's classic records to play on my portable record player, but as kids we were into the new of the era we came up in. Even my mother encouraged this by buying these records we kids loved. So my point is this: WE are the teachers...the youth knows a lot or can learn a lot because of US. If we continue to say "the youth don't know anything", it's the same as saying "we didn't know any better to show them". *shrugs*
Message to my fellow music lovers!
To my fellow music lovers: Lately there's been an increase of you talking about the state of music today. For the most part, you're right: music has changed today, but if u haven't noticed, it's been changing...some revolutionary, since the 50s...maybe before that but the impact of Rock and Roll comes to mind as a drastic change from jazz and blues before it. Whole other topic ;) Everybody is entitled to their own opinion...I have expressed mine as well. But the main complaints I'm hearing are that there is no good music out there and the fact our legends aren't releasing music as they should. Well...those aren't facts...folk tell me all the time that because I either know or have met these legends I am "in the know"...but YOU ARE TOO. Lots of you have the same mutual friends as I do...and probably not the same Internet provider but y'all possess Bing, Google, etc when you get on the Internet. Today's legends are still doing shows and still releasing music. Now to you purists, I am one too...but I would remain open minded when you check out our legends' new material and shows. I've been to plenty and I may not either have been around or too young to go to their shows in their heyday but these legends do put on an awesome show and release good music. It's because of our support they can make these things happen. If you are "friends" on FB, for the most part you can hit them up as to when they are coming to your town or when are they releasing new music. Check their fan pages and/or websites. Support our legends if you're not into the new music that's out. Most of these legends aren't signed to major labels anymore but they are doing their own thing and YOU have the connections just like me to keep up on their new projects. Don't wait until they are gone to do tributes and support them. That's like buying flowers for a funeral. Also there are PLENTY of independent artists doing their own thing too with HUGE fan bases. I've posted some on my pages. They are producing and putting out good music...if not BETTER than some of these new artists on major labels with major production teams. Go to their shows...some of these shows are cheap or free and the shows are WAY better than the $300 on average tickets for major artists. Buy their music...many Internet online stations play their stuff all the time but YOU have to use your Internet as your main resource...or you can hit me up LOL Just saying...let's curb our anger and complaints and support those doing real things.
