LPM Day Four

Today was the final day of LPM, and the day of my performance!

Overall I was quite happy with the performance as without live instruments and more time on the visuals, there isn't much more I could do. I must admit it was a little strange performing without an instrument of some kind (first time ever), however it does make for a very portable performance. Feedback was positive, with the viewers (of those who talked to me afterwards) enjoying the unique visual style. From an audiovisual sense, the piece was more visual accompanying a music performance as I choose not to utilize any of the developed audio-reactive tools.

LPM Day Three

Day Three of LPM started with an actionscript workshop for resolume and onyx, followed by a demonstration on mixing visuals using a Raspberry Pi and Playstation controller. The idea of VJing using only a Raspberry Pi or Ouya games console is really kool, but not too applicable to my practice. Afterwards there was a demonstration of Vezér, a timeline and control software for Visual artists. The program seems similar to Duration, but runs via MIDI instead of OSC, and is proprietary I believe.

I found Ocusonic's Chasing More Waves performance quite interesting. Paul recorded 30 hours of video on a residency in New York by visualizing sine tones, pops, and clicks using analog equipment. These videos are then re-sequenced live using Max and a Launchpad.

LPM Day Two

Today was the second day of LPM. Unfortunately I missed the workshop on Connecting Sound and Visuals (using SuperCollider and Processing), however I did catch Rorscach_3.2's performance later on that evening. Some interesting performances were Raw_Geometry by NOITU

and Jago VJ who uses self-recorded clips for her live VJing sets.

I suppose the same issues that I face as an audiovisual artist are common among the discipline - congruent audio and visual materials using video clips. As such clips are governed by their own time value, fitting them within another time frame is problematic. Some VJs, like Jago above, seem to use a fast-cut montage approach, whereas I prefer a more longer-stretch smear approach in which both audio and visual layers are synced via keypoints, and otherwise may wax-and-wave in and out of relative syncronicity. Maybe I should try this montage approach also!

LPM Day One

Today was the first day of LPM, a festival for live video performers. After registration, I attended the RecodeArt: Back to the Future of Digital Art workshop by Ervare Farroretre in which programs used to generate digital art in the late seventies and early eighties are 're-coded' in Processing and other creative coding tools and re-exhibited online.

My favorite performance of the evening was IN-STRUCTURE by NOBU_LAB which featured a laptop ensemble trio engulfed by front and rear projections onto hanging material. The music was ambient and glitch influenced (performed in Max I think) and synced the glitch tones to geometric shapes and structures, and was (at least in part) performed using some simple gestures of the ensemble (using arms as they were seated throughout).

A longer video can be found here. The performance reminded me of NIN's Lights in the Sky tour, the main impetus for wishing to pursue a career as an audiovisual artist. Projecting film onto fabric surrounding me could be a very interesting avenue for my final performance as I believe that I need to go beyond the cinema screen - this is evident from my performance of Вавилон at NewXing.

Some other great performances were Single # Double # Triple by Apotropia, and the VJ sets once the AV performances finished.
