The 'B' Word
“I’m crazy about you,” TK blurts out, stepping out of his hold to pace. “I didn’t plan it. I didn’t see it coming. You were just supposed to be this cool guy I had good chemistry and good sex with, someone I would be friends with and share a bed with on occasion."

Carlos and TK run into Carlos’ three sisters on the street and decide to have dinner with them. Over the course of the meal, their friends with benefits relationship changes.

Carlos holds the door for TK to walk through, trying to keep his grin at bay in the face of TK’s epic pout. He’d suggested a night of putt-putt, thinking it would be a friendly and easygoing activity they could enjoy as they try to put more emphasis on the friends part of their unconventional relationship. It was supposed to be a casual night out. However, Carlos didn’t anticipate that TK would be horrible at the game or be such a lovable sore loser.
“You cheated,” TK accuses him, the scowl on his handsome face cuter than it has any right to be. Carlos swallows back a sigh at the thought. It’s moments like this that show him how truly head over heels he is for the man before him.
He pushes that thought down too.
TK has made it more than clear he’s not ready for more than what they are right now – friends who enjoy each other’s company in and out of the bedroom.
He tells himself how he always does when these thoughts start to creep in that it’s enough for now. He gets to spend time with TK; he gets to touch him, hear the soft sounds he makes when they’re together, he gets his smiles.
So what if they don’t have a label?
Having some parts of TK Strand, Carlos has quickly learned, is infinitely better than not having him at all.
“At putt-putt?” he questions with an amused grin pushing away his less than pleasant thoughts. “You think I cheated at putt-putt?”
“Yes,” TK shoots back, his expression set in a childish frown, causing Carlos’ grin to grow.
“How exactly?” he questions, outright smirking when TK stalls, his pout growing as he can’t come up with anything.
“You distracted me with your you-ness,” TK finally answers, waving a hand in his direction as if it explains everything.
Carlos feels his face go warm, but it doesn’t stop him from feeling incredibly smug too. He reaches out, slipping a finger through one of the loops of TK’s jeans, pleased when TK comes into his space easily, his arms going around Carlos’ neck as he holds him close.
“That’s an interesting way to say you think I’m hot, sweetheart,” he murmurs teasingly as he presses his nose against TK’s temple.
“You already know I think that,” TK scoffs at him, turning his head to kiss the corner of his mouth, his tongue peeking out in a tiny teasing lick. “Don’t pretend now.”
Carlos lets out a steadying breath as his body instantly reacts to TK’s goading. “I still like to hear it,” he answers with a playful pout of his own, happy when it makes TK chuckle.
TK brings his hands down, cupping Carlos’ face between them, using the leverage to close the tiny height difference between them as he brushes his lips against his. “Needy,” he whispers, the word spoken against Carlos’ mouth causing him to let out a moan, proving TK’s point.
“Let’s go back to my place,” he whispers back, his hands giving TK’s hips a suggestive squeeze.
TK laughs softly as he shakes his head. “You promised me dinner.”
“I’ll make us something when we get there,” he promises now, groaning when TK shakes his head again.
“You and I both know – if we get behind closed doors, we’re not eating anything but each other, Reyes,” TK tells him, smirking shamelessly when he gasps at his words. “I want real food first.”
“Fine,” he grumbles, willing down the blush on his face and the arousal coursing through him at the mental image TK’s words have provoked.
TK goes to take a step away from him, ready to start walking on their quest to find some food, but Carlos holds on to him, grinning back at him when it makes TK raise a brow in question. He doesn’t answer with words; instead, he cups TK’s face like he’d done to him, swallowing the small gasp he lets out with his lips.

The summer sun shines brightly in the blue Austin sky over Butler Park, the heat from the blazing inferno having little effect on TK after years spent rushing into flaming structures with little ventilation. He may have made the switch to the paramedic team a while ago, but some things will never leave him, and he’s always thankful for his experience as a firefighter when the relentless Texas sun threatens to roast him alive during the hottest months of the year.
Besides, he finds that he has little reason to complain as he scans the cityscape before him, the constant murmur of the Texas capital all around him. The fresh, gentle breeze feels like a salve against his skin after a long week of wild calls and less-than-adequate sleep, and he sinks down onto the large, soft blanket beneath him, letting the sound of children in the nearby playground lull him into a state of serenity as he rests his eyes beneath his sunglasses, his breathing deep and body relaxed as his anxious mind stills for the first time in what feels like forever.
That is, at least, until a groan from his right pulls him out of his newly acquired Zen-like state. The corner of TK’s mouth slides upwards until he’s wearing a slight smirk, trying to press down the laugh that he can feel crawling up his throat.
“You alright there, babe?” he asks, turning to glance at the man lying next to him on the blanket.
Carlos merely groans again, the sound barely audible from where he has his face hidden inside his balled-up t-shirt that he’s been using as a pillow ever since they sat down on the lawn.
TK bites down on his bottom lip, reigning in his smile as best he can, even though Carlos can’t actually see it. He reaches out, dragging his fingers gently along his fiancé’s bare back, slick with sweat. He feels Carlos shutter beneath him, another groan pulled from deep inside him.
“You know, if you feel so terrible, we could’ve just stayed in bed this morning,” TK reminds him, scooting a little closer to press his lips against his partner’s shoulder, resting his chin there as he stares at his favorite head of wild curls.
“Nuh-uh,” Carlos whines, turning his head slowly towards TK and squinting against the harsh sunlight. TK takes pity on him and brings his left hand up to shield his eyes from the sun, watching as Carlos blinks sadly up at him. “I promised.”

When TK finally moves in with him, the last thing Carlos had expected to find in his stuff is a guitar - or any musical instrument for that matter.
The second last thing he's expecting is to find out that his boyfriend is secretly a musical genius.

“Is that a guitar?”
They’re unpacking the last of TK’s boxes - (and, seriously, how can one person have so much stuff? This seems like way too much for someone who was already sharing a house, but when Carlos had asked, TK had just laughed and said he should have seen what it was like when his mom was moving in. then he’d gone quiet because Carlos had seen it, but in reverse, and this is definitely ‘things-they-don’t-talk-about’ territory) -
But the one thing Carlos had never expected to find in TK’s stuff was a guitar - or any musical instrument for that matter.
TK shrugs. “Yeah, why?”
Carlos stares at him, wondering how the fuck they’ve been dating for so long and he’s only just now finding out about this. “I didn’t know you played,” he says, reaching out to pick up the instrument. It’s beautiful and Carlos can’t resist lightly strumming it, the strings sounding perfectly in tune.
“I don’t,” TK replies, watching him with an amused smile. “Not as much as I used to, anyway. I took lessons as a kid and I sort of picked it back up when I was getting sober for the first time. I only really brought it down here on a whim, but I haven’t had much chance to practise because of, you know, everything.”
Carlos nods, handing the guitar over when TK reaches for it. “Play something for me?” he can’t help but ask.
But TK just shakes his head, an apologetic look on his face. “Maybe another time,” he says, then grins. “Wouldn’t want to give you cause to kick me out when I’ve only just moved in.”

love pays no mind to desolation (flows like a river through the soul) | on ao3
They step into the fair area along with the rest of the team — Mateo already babbling about how he’s going to eat all the cotton candy he can, Isabella and Evie tugging at both his hands so he can keep up with them as they race each other to the first stall. Tommy and Charlie chase behind them, alternating between calling their girls out and letting them run themselves ragged. Grace and Judd are holding hands, lost in their little bubble of happiness, while Marjan and Nancy saunter behind them. They’re pointing out at all the lights and the different attractions, awe etched in their features, Paul telling them all about the different ways fairs were held in Chicago. TK is flittering around like a buzzing ball of energy, Captain Strand shaking his head and unabashedly laughing at his son’s antics.
Carlos follows them, a soft smile tugging at the edge of his lips and his nerves on fire. Tonight’s a really important night — not only because it’s the third anniversary of the 126 becoming the family he’s always envied, but also because he’s planning on changing his present into a bright future if TK allows him to. Hands stuck in his jacket’s pockets, he fondles the velvet black box where all his hopes lie. He hadn’t thought that the whole fire team would be joining them when he’d asked TK on a date to the county fair. He’d wanted to get his boyfriend alone, on a Ferris Wheel ride — he’d even contacted the fair’s organizers and asked for the wheel to be stopped while they’d be up in the air so he could ask the most important question of his life.
He hadn’t thought, three years ago, that asking a green-eyed stranger out to line-dance would lead to some of the most stressful and perfect years of his life — including a shooting, several on-the-job injuries, a kidnapping, a suspension and a promotion. He’d never thought that the answer to his simple question under the Northern Lights would take him to tonight.
He hadn’t thought proposing would be as stressful as it’s been so far, either — and here they are, anyway. He’s tried once before, but a massive pile-up in the highway tore apart their plans for their only night off that week, and ever since Carlos has been planning the next perfect moment. Which should have been tonight — the county fair, the fireworks, the Ferris Wheel — except for the fact that TK has invited the whole of the 126, including his father, therefore stomping all over Carlos’ romantic plans.
“You are awfully quiet tonight,” Paul points out, showing up by his side suddenly and scaring him to no end. “What’s going on in that little head of yours?”
Carlos laughs. He winces when it comes out strangled. “Nothing, really,” he says quickly.
“Might want to try that again,” Paul teases him. “I know something’s up. You’re transparent, Reyes.”
“It’s really nothing,” Carlos tries to amend. “I’d just been planning tonight to be a little different, that’s all.”
