Review: The intricate new single ‘Butterflies’ by singer-songwriter Luch Stefano captures layers of fluctuating instrumentals and a meaningful message
Bringing a unique perspective to the singer-songwriting world, the up-coming musician Luch Stefano began as a busker on the streets of central London, turning his passions for music into a reality for anyone who would stop to listen. Raised on grime and hip-hop, Luch’s work blends intricate wordplay with captivating melodies, fuelled by his love for live instruments that he captures exceptionally within every release. As he’s gradually built-up an audience through the online scene, Luch now shares his newest single ‘Butterflies’ for the world to hear.
Mesmerising right from the get-go, ‘Butterflies’ begins with Luch’s hauntingly emotive vocals, breathily leading in with a short and intimate line that’s immediately encapsulating. A quick-paced drum beat and subdued acoustic guitar plucks soon join in, shifting in tone from the opening’s delicacy to a tumbling speed that’s thrilling to listen along with. Only continuing to build, more dominant drums and bright piano keys also join into the mix, a growing bedding of instrumental layers that individually all hold tenderness but together intertwine for a heightened peak of sound. Pairing down, the chorus soars into a more soft concoction of just piano keys, glowing chimes, simple beats and acoustic guitar strums, all the while Luch’s vocals reach through an impressively clean range of smooth highs and lows you can’t help but feel the resonant emotion behind. As the song progresses it only continues to build up further, adding sampled strings that make the fluctuating experience that is ‘Butterflies’ feel all the more theatrical and orchestral at heart. If a sound could be described as poetic, then Luch Stefano would have nailed it inside of ‘Butterflies’, as this three and a half minute ebb and flow of sound carries a soul within its every moving part.
Spilling through his poignant layerings of sound in ‘Butterflies’ , Luch Stefano writes of the cyclical nature of dating and growing feelings, just for one or the other to be lacking the butterflies of a true love. As it leads in with the declaration that ‘this is how it starts, again’ , Luch makes it clear that this is not the first or likely the last time he’ll be stuck within the same loop, searching for his soulmate but wading through people that aren’t quite the perfect fit along the way. Struggling to accept the reality that he’s fallen harder, Luch sings ‘you said we can just be friends, but I want more than that’, yearning to act on his emotions but being held at arms reach from someone who knows he’s not the one for them. As his heart aches, the chorus hook rings out ‘It’s tearing me apart, the fact that I’m still not giving you butterflies’ , struggling through the ruts of opening yourself up and being left shattered for it, a continual cycle of dating and falling in love. Through it all though, Luch still promotes a message of knowing your worth in lines like ‘I do not need fake love’ , feeling that he’s deserving of someone who can reciprocate everything he’s willing to give. If you so choose to put it on repeat, ‘Butterflies’ really feels like it encompasses the feel of a repeating journey we’ve all been through that always goes the same way, searching for love but left hurt time and time again - hoping it’ll all be worth it in the end when things finally fall into place.
