@smokedanced asked: ' We're still friends, right? ' from Lucius
Ely had been washing up after a raid. It was that point in the evening when the adrenaline began to slip away, the screams stopped ringing in their ears and they slowly sank back into the steadily bubbling anger. It was mixed with a sickening guilt now but the brief respite from the all consuming sadness and anger that usually plagued them after Stede left made it worth it. Instead of focussing on the feeling, they did their best to focus on the methodical hand scrubbing- the clear water in the basin turning a murky copper.
It was in the silence (aside from the quiet sloshing of water and natural creaking of the ship) that they heard something that sounded like a mix between a cough and a sneeze. Instinctively, Ely turned around but there was nobody there. The sound had sounded like it came from the other side of the wall. Only, Elys little cupboard room was right up against the hull.
Furrowing their brow, they thought for a moment before knocking on the wall. It sounded hollow. Like there was a false barrier between them and the real hull. It was probably designed to limit damage if the ship hit something and began to take on water. Still, that was definitely where the sound had come from. Tentatively, Ely picked up their sword from where it sat against the wall before jamming it between two slats. There was a muffled sound of surprise and Ely considered too late that they probably should have given some warning. Still, they didn't know who was behind the wall. It could have been someone lying in wait to kill the crew and take the ship.
They used their sword as a lever to pull out a plank of wood, sending the nails holding it in place clattering to the floor. Catching the plank before it could follow the nails and alert everyone else that something was wrong, Ely stuck their head into the now open cavity wall.
'We're still friends, right?'
Well, that was a surprise. Ely took a step back.
"I-I thought... Didn't Ed... you know... drown you?" It was probably a touchy subject but what was Ely supposed to do? Not ask?
