Pindices (2005, Lucy Kimbell) Pindices is a practice-led project, appeared for the first time in the exhibition Making Thing Public by bruno Latour and Peter Weibel and then used in many others events through Europe. The installation is sought to design means for making political activity visible in an unconventional way. Participants are invited to make public a reckoning of their everyday political and citizenship activity. The main devices are button badges with phrases describing different acts (i.e. I recycled, I said what I believe, I vote) to which people could help themselves. The badges were arranged in 2m-high plastic tubes which from a distance resemble physical bar charts. As people take the badges, the levels in the tubes vary presenting an aggregate view of political activity, creating a sort of user-made data visualization. In conclusion, the piece operates on a number of levels: - By creating a way for members of a temporary community to make sense of what they are hearing and discussing. - By creating a near real-time record of how participants are engaging with the ideas at the conference. - By revealing the creation of data and its analysis to be a thoroughly social process. - Sculpturally, by creating seductive forms that draw people in.
