Ceylon is a little gem of a game. A simple but delightful mix of different mechanisms wrapped in a quick, surprisingly thinky game about growing tea. It is beautiful quite beautiful too. Another play of Babylonia, which I’m liking. Despite being pretty novel, it is still a throwback to the late ‘90s; I like it but given Samurai and Through the Desert do exist, I don’t know how much real staying power it will have for those of us who have played a lot of those games over time. Because of the way points build up and “infrastructure” locks in, I suspect the somewhat lower level of interactivity will make it less interesting in the long run than, say, Samurai, which really is a constant back-and-forth of dueling for position. Babylonia feels a bit more staid to me at this point. We’ll see! But I suspect this will be a really solid Knizia that’ll be good for a while but not end up on the top shelf.
