Comparison: Ludo's Rat Army vs. Ludo's Old Army in Star vs. the Forces of Evil
Composition:
Ludo’s Old Army: A ragtag group of mostly large, dim-witted monsters recruited from Mewni’s wilderness — giant birds, spider-bats, bearicorns, multi-headed beasts, bald eagles, and various bulky creatures. They were physically imposing but lacked discipline.
Ludo’s Rat Army: Entirely composed of hundreds of small, identical brown rats with red eyes. Uniform in appearance and behavior, resembling a swarm or hive.
Competence & Effectiveness:
Ludo’s Old Army: Extremely incompetent — constantly bickered, ignored orders, got drunk, partied instead of guarding, and frequently abandoned Ludo (e.g., they ditched him multiple times in Season 1). They rarely won fights and were easily defeated by Star and Marco.
Ludo’s Rat Army: Surprisingly competent and disciplined. They obeyed Ludo without question, executed coordinated attacks, swarmed enemies effectively, and successfully helped Ludo conquer the Butterfly Kingdom in "Starcrushed" (Season 2 finale). They operated like a well-trained military unit despite being tiny rats.
Leadership & Loyalty:
Ludo’s Old Army: Barely loyal — followed Ludo out of fear or convenience, but deserted him the moment things got tough or a better party appeared. They openly mocked him.
Ludo’s Rat Army: Completely loyal and fanatical. They worshipped Ludo as a leader (possibly influenced by the wand fragment he possessed), chanted his name, and never betrayed him. Even after Ludo lost the wand, many rats stuck around initially.
Size & Strength:
Ludo’s Old Army: Individually much stronger and larger — capable of brute force destruction when they bothered to fight.
Ludo’s Rat Army: Individually tiny and weak, but overwhelming in numbers. Their strength came from swarming tactics, biting in unison, and sheer volume (could form giant rat piles or overwhelm larger foes).
Origin:
Ludo’s Old Army: Recruited manually by Ludo across Mewni after he was kicked out of his family castle.
Ludo’s Rat Army: Magically summoned/created by the corrupted Book of Spells and the whispering dark wand fragment in Ludo’s possession (influenced by Toffee). They appeared after Ludo gained the wand piece in Season 2.
Duration & Fate:
Ludo’s Old Army: Disbanded early in Season 1 after repeated failures; members scattered.
Ludo’s Rat Army: Lasted through most of Season 2; most abandoned Ludo after he lost the wand and went mad, reverting to normal rats or fleeing.
Role in the Story:
Ludo’s Old Army: Comic relief — highlighted Ludo’s incompetence as a villain and inability to command respect.
Ludo’s Rat Army: Serious threat — showed Ludo at his most dangerously effective, enabling him to briefly seize the throne and force Star to flee Mewni.
Overall, the Rat Army was vastly more competent, disciplined, and successful than the old monster army, largely due to magical influence overriding their natural behavior and giving Ludo actual control for the first time.
