Thursday, October 5: Shaman, “Over Your Head”

With three-fifths of Angra’s classic lineup on board, Shaman’s first album played like a more natural follow-up to Fireworks than what the next iteration of Angra actually delivered on Rebirth.  Tunes like “Over Your Head” retained the same mix of progressive and power metal, with Luis Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori providing a dynamic and bouncing backbeat and André Matos singing like a Brazilian Michael Kiske.  And although Hugo Mariutti couldn’t quite replicate the combined dexterity of Rafael Bittencourt and Kiko Loureiro, he was a more than able guitarist who delivered nuanced and textured riffing.  It wasn’t enough to break Shaman in a meaningful way, as Angra hadn’t built up enough momentum to draw anticipation for the bands created in the wake of its fissure, but “Over Your Head” offered the same unique strain of power metal that nearly made Angra a global powerhouse.
