April 22, 2019 - Mendoza, Argentina - Day Four - Wine Tasting

 On our last day in Mendoza, we did what most people visit to do: wine tasting. We took a bike tour through Luján de Cuyo, one of the main winemaking valleys of Mendoza. We visited two wineries, the first a newer, more modern winery that reminded me of what one can find in Napa. This one was called Clos de Chacras. We chatted with a British couple as we drank wine, one of those lovely travel conversations that moves past small talk quite quickly.

Next, we visited an older winery owned by a man named Carmelo Patti that I absolutely fell in love with. He gave us the tour, and it was so wonderful to see him be passionate about what was obviously his life’s calling. He taught us how to best drink wine, and told us why he keeps his wines in cellars for years after producing them so that people receive them properly aged. He described wines as people: entities that need time to develop and grow, and reach full greatness after that time. An important quote from him: “It is not a sin to drink a bad wine, but it is a sin to drink a good wine before it is great.”
