Joseph's Dream

In this scene a distraught Joseph is quickly established as he learns that Mary is pregnant. She is left isolated from him and the community in a long shot and empty frame.

Seeing The Light

For Joseph’s dream I rigged the camera directly over his bed as I wanted the audience to see him turning his head from side to side, this way and that, as he went through the arguments of the dilemma in his dream. On one side I wanted a cold light source – the blueish light of the night, while on the other I placed a candle to motivate a warm light. I used a daylight balanced Kinoflo on one side and the candle supplemented with a tungsten flicker box on the other. Finally Joseph ‘sees the light’, looks at the candle and goes outside with it to look at the night sky – or at least the CGI stars.

The Road To Bethlehem

The scene then flashes forward to see Mary & Joseph preparing to go to Bethlehem and there’s a lovely Biblical landscape of the road that leads to it populated with many travellers. For this shot we got up early to get good light across the landscape, set a frame and then had our handful of extras walk down the track. Then in the edit this patched together to look like a small multitude of wayfarers.
