          he’s tired,  he’s frustrated.  and that which colleague had promised would work has failed to live up to his expectations.  he scowls at the device in front of him,  the readings that remain infuriatingly stagnant.  he’d told ly it would work,  with 100% certainty.  it has done everything but work.    ❛ it means exactly what I think it means.  not my fault if the world doesn’t follow its own laws. ❜    nor,  surely,  can he be faulted for relaying the assurances of others.  he slams his fist against the side of the device,  as if the force will jostle it into functionality.  it’s worked before.  he sighs heavily when nothing changes.    ❛ okay,  so,  I clearly did something wrong. ❜

          Frankly, he’s not sure he can. The words verged already toward the incomprehensible, and Cam’s dead sure he mangled the description given him by his friend and colleague. It’s like that terrible childhood game, through which each repetition of a message grows increasingly distorted until it’s fully ruined, meaning lost to obscurity. The only difference is that there’s no string of intermediaries: he’s the only one, and still he cannot communicate it faithfully.    ❛ No? ❜    Face squishes momentarily into half-embarrassed, half-sheepish expression. It eases into wry laughter at himself.    ❛ Look, I swear I understood it when she said it to me, but I’ll be damned if I understand a word of it now. ❜
