(birthday) dinner
Isaiah was not working that day; he had taken a day off after being busy all week. It was Saturday, but not any Saturday. Even though he had not celebrated it ever since Norah and the kids died, it didn’t keep his birthday from happening. Thirty-nine. That was almost forty years old, and although he was still in much better shape than some younger folks, he hated the thought of growing old. He could not even explain why, after all he could live almost another hundred years if he kept going at this pace. He walked around the house one last time, making sure he had not forgotten anything. Isaiah had spent the day cleaning and cooking and planned on surprising Lyn at the library at the end of her shift for a surprise date at his place. Which meant he had to make sure everything was perfect. Not that he was particularly messy, but he didn’t want her to find one of his family pictures he still kept next to the bed, or the one of his wedding, sitting on the fireplace. He knew he would have to reveal her the truth at some point, but he was terrified by her reaction. Especially since they had been seeing each other for a while now. He knew it was something he should have told from the start. Stepping into his bedroom, he made sure the Christmas picture of Norah, his sons and him usually on his dresser was well hidden in a drawer, covered in a pile of boxer briefs. He felt ridiculous, hiding his life like this, and as he turned to leave the room, he caught a glimpse of Becky lying on the bed, staring at him, obviously judgemental. “Don’t look at me like this. You don’t get it.” He told the dog, as if she could really understand what was going on. He sighed and walked out the door, before looking at the clock. The lamb chops were in the oven slowly cooking, and Lyn would finish working soon. He grabbed his set of keys and put on his sneakers, before leaving the house. He entered his car, and drove to the library. He turned off the car in the parking lot, and headed inside, quickly noticing Lyn at her desk. Smiling, Isaiah walked to meet her, scanning the room. They were alone, which was good news. Leaning onto the desk in front of her, he kissed her forehead. “Hey beautiful.” He said playfully. “Dinner at my place tonight?” He asked, his finger lifting her chin as he approached to steal her a kiss. “Well, not just dinner. I might not bring you back to your place after.” He added, murmuring against her lips before grinning.
