Never sure what people mean when they tell me to get a ‘real job’.

Doing well in school, people always expected for me to become more than a lowly binman. But it never stopped me from pursuing my dreams!

While everyone is busy stuck behind a computer in cushy office chairs, I get to be holding onto the back of a stinking bin lorry. Loading bins over and over, occasionally bin juice squirting onto me! Sweat constantly soaking my Hivis in the summer.

Parents get so disappointed when their children say they want to end up like me. But I always tell them to follow their dreams ;) If not who else will be the next generation of binmen?

I used to be able to muck around with the other bin lads on the rounds. Having done the job for a few years, I can’t deny that loading hundreds and hundreds of smelly bins is often monotonous and repetitive. Messing about just made the day so much quicker. Often even distracting me from the splashes of bin juice getting on me whilst hauling bin bag after bin bag!

Management has been breathing down our necks since finding out our bin round is the most underperforming in the depot. They’ve installed cameras at the back of the lorry in the interest of “safety”. They now monitor our every movement. Any chatting/joking will be promptly dealt with by blaring reprimanding through the built-in speakers.

I do wonder why they treat us like school children. But I guess since we binmen don’t have any school qualifications to get a better high-paying job, we deserve to be treated like the delinquents that we are. Better stop complaining, as all I ever will know is how to load bins.

Hot sweaty summer days are the best because I get to proudly wear my hi-vis fedora hat that I bought specifically for my job! It's absolutely essential for protecting me from the sun and drawing people's attention to me while I clean up after them :)

I used to wear an expensive grey fedora hat that accompanied perfectly with my ironed suit whilst working corporate. Long gone are those days! I've still continued the habit with my matching hat and t-shirt though. I mean being a binman is still a pretty respectable job.

I love to wave and greet passerbys but they often ignore me or laugh, mostly not at me or my outfit hopefully! But my new binman colleague doesn't seem too keen to interact with the public. He's probably still too embarrassed of his new lowlife status, but I'm sure he'll soon grow into the job - just like I have.
