Intricate drawings of M’onma, a Japanese man in his 60s, consist of layers of gossamer images that resemble ghostly tattoos and must be among the gentlest expressions of the horror vacui ever made. The artist, who lives in Tokyo, sometimes recedes to the mountains or temples outside of the city to draw. He doesn’t speak much about his artistic process. He never was a traditional artist, rather he wanted to be and did some still lives etc. When he entered his forties, M’onma describes a sensation of being taken over by an entity – a spirit or divine force took over his hands. When the vision came through him, it terrified him and he slowly stopped making art of any kind for a long time. When he began to make it again he gave in to the vision and let it control his hand. Instead of fighting this impulse, he followed it, and has been creating his pieces in trance ever since.
