*Right my wrongs*
Warnings: Kinda based off of ‘Right my wrongs’ by Bryson Tiller. Angst, not proofread, Dangerous era
Michael who was your childhood best friend, Ghosted you and you finally find out why.
You sighed, putting the phone back in the receiver after leaving your voicemail. It was happening again. Michael hadn’t called you, nor returned your calls or voice messages.
You two had become friends shortly after you and Randy became friends as kids. You and Michael both found trust in each other and made a pact to stay best friends forever.
But this was the second time he broke it. Last time it was because he had gotten a girlfriend, and he didnt want to make her uncomfortable knowing that you guys were still friends. He apologized for a month until you finally forgave him.
This time you didn’t know what for. You didn’t even bother calling Mama Katherine because you didn’t want to get her involved. You grabbed the television remote, flipping past channels.
You stopped in your tracks once you saw him. Him sitting beside a woman who you thought looked familiar, being interviewed by Diane Sawyer. You stopped breathing once you read the headline.
Married? He had gotten married? He didn’t even invite you to the wedding.
“…a private ceremony,” Diane’s voice carried through the room. “Only close friends and family in attendance.”
It was like your blood turned into lava. It was obvious that the two of you weren’t exactly what you thought you were.
2 years later
Katherine had invited you to dinner, which wasn't strange at all being that you've known her since you were a child
You bit your lip as you drove through the gates of Hayvenhurst. You hadn't seen this place in a few years. It was almost like your second home.
You smiled softly, your sunglasses in your hand as you approached the front door. You knocked softly, shifting your weight on one leg. "Tootie?" Marlon peaked from behind the door, calling you the childhood nickname that he and Randy had given you.
"Nah it's the cops" you rolled your eyes. He smiled, grabbing your hand as he pulled you in. He pulled you into a welcoming hug, causing you to laugh softly.
"Where mama at?" You placed your sunglasses on your head. "She using the restroom. Come on in the dining room" he led you as if you didn't know the place.
Your hands held on to your Louis Vuitton bag as you followed Marlon. “Hey everybody.” You waved, chairs scraping the floor.
Latoya took you in for a hug first, then Jackie, Tito, Reebie, and Jermaine. “Where’s Randy?” You fixed you hair. “He got the flu” Jermaine rolled his eyes.
“Flu my ass” Tito shook his head, causing you to bark out a laugh. “I’m serious. Boy don’t wanna do shit with the family” Tito shook his head.
"Leave y'all brother alone" Katherine shook her head, walking in. You froze almost unnoticed, Michael standing beside her. You definitely expect him to be here since he was so busy all to time.
"Where's Joseph?" You asked, not like you really cared. Everyone shrugged, you nodding in response. You sat down, scooting you chair closer to the table.
"Tootie gets to say Grace since we ain't seen her in a while" Katherine settled in her seat, earning a nod from you.
“Lord, thank You for bringing everybody together tonight. Thank You for the food we're about to eat and for keeping everyone safe. Please continue to watch over this family and the people we love. Amen."
"Amen" Everyone echoed.
"So, Toot how's work been?" Katherine asked, causing you to smile. "Ugh! It's been fine" you shrugged honestly.
“So who’s all married? I can’t keep up with this family’s marriages” You asked, and intentional jab at Michael. You wanted to hear him say he was divorced so you could smile in his face.
Your eyes stayed on Michael as you listened to everyone’s answers. “I’m divorced” he answered simply.
“Awe really? That was quick it was only about two years” You feigned compassion. The table went silent, a smile tugging at your lips. “If yall would ‘Scuse me I have to use to restroom” You wiped your hands on the napkin before scooting your chair back.
You whistled on the way to the bathroom, dancing along with the tune as you walked. Once you made it in the bathroom you let out a breath that you’d been holding since you saw Michael.
“You will make it through this dinner” you spoke to yourself in the mirror.
“Y/N what was that” Michael barged in the bathroom. Your head snapped in his direction, a small yelp falling from your lips.
“What if I was using the bathroom!” You pushed him as he closed the door. “Well you weren’t” He answered.
“You know what that was.” You replied to his previous question. “Stopped talking to me for some weak ass marriage. That didn’t even make it to 5 years!” You exclaimed as if it was a joke.
He huffed out a breath, running his hands over his face. You scoffed watching him do so, shaking your head. “Y/N…I’m sorry I know—I know was wrong” he frowned.
“Fuck that weak ass sorry, Michael” you waved him off. “Do you not know how much we’ve gone through together? And you’re always quick to throw it away for some little bitch you met a week ago!”
He stayed silent, biting his lip. His arms were crossed over his chest and his nonchalant expression was honestly making you even madder.
“I know we’ve been through a lot i just…Y/N I’m a coward and I didn’t know how to speak to you” He huffed, causing you to roll your eyes.
“Yeah you are” you leaned on the counter.
“Tell me what I can do to make it right.” He sighed. “I know I should know…But please let me fix it”
You bit your lip, avoiding looking at him as you held back tears. “First I want you to forget my number, second I want you to forget my name, and then forget I even exist. Cause I don’t wanna talk to you no more”
Michael’s face fell.
For the first time since he’d walked into the bathroom, he looked genuinely scared. “Y/N…” he frowned.
“No.” You shook your head, finally looking at him. Tears glossed your eyes, but you refused to let them fall. “You don’t get to come in here talking about fixing things now.”
“Where was all this when I was calling?” You tilted your head. Michael looked away “Where was all this when I spent months wondering what I did wrong?”
“You didn’t do anything wrong.” He objected, earning a humorless laugh from you. “Then why was I the one losing my best friend?” Your eyebrows knitted together.
He frowned, noticing the tears in your eyes. He was ready to cry himself. He’d never seen you this mad at him. And you didn’t mean to yell knowing his past but her was just so damn infuriating.
“Michael you were my person” You scoffed, trying to swallow your tears and it obviously didn’t work since the tears escaped.“I’d choose you a billion times, and you never chose me once. Not fucking once”
“I was there for every tour, Every studio session, every time you couldn’t sleep, every time you wanted to gossip, laugh, cry. You called me.”
You crossed your arms, looking at him. He stood with a frown on his face, staring at you who had tears running down your face. He pulled you into a hug, his hand cradling the back of your head.
“Move Michael” you tried to push your way out of his embrace, but failing. After a bit of fighting you just stopped and allowed yourself to cry.
“I couldn’t have you and a wife because…” he stopped, exhaling sharply, like even he knew how bad that sounded “Because it was always you” he said quieter. “That was the problem.”
“I knew if I let myself have you, really have you, I wouldn’t do anything halfway. And I couldn’t…” he shook his head against yours, frustrated. “I couldn’t give you what you deserved. Not with my life, not with everything going on.”
“I kept you where I could keep you”
“I was trying to protect you from me…” he swallowed “but I didn’t think about what that would actually feel like for you.”
You rolled your eyes, wiping your tears on his shirt. “Why didn’t you just tell me? Now ‘s too late” You muttered, you could hear how fast his heart was beating, for some reason it just made you think harder.
You sighed, finally pushing you way out of his arms. “Can you get out? I need a moment” you turned to the mirror, patting under your eyes.
“‘M Gonna call you later. I promise” He sighed, leaving out of the bathroom. You looking in the mirror, taking in a shaky breath. You wipe the mascara from around your eyes as best as you could.
You washed your hands before walking out. Your arms were crossed over your chest, your eyes focused on the floor. The dining room was silent as you entered.
“Sorry for taking a while” you smiled, toying with your necklace, dropping one hand to your side. You took a seat, taking a sip of the glass of water beside your plate. “I made your plate for you. Jermaine was about to eat all the potatoes” LaToya smiled, causing you to laugh.
“Thank you, Toy” you picked up your fork, taking a bite of the chicken breast that lay beside the potatoes. You chewed slowly, the sounds around you almost silent compared to the thoughts in your head.
