Diary of a Haunting: Possession by M. Verano
This is the second addition to the Haunting anthology series. Different girl; different location, but at the same time this character is going though a much similar problem.
PLOT: Laetitia was once a blogger showing off her colorful wigs, her makeup tutorials. She also had a passion for singing. It was Laetitia’s ultimate dream to become a pop singer for the world to love. One day during auditions she lost her singing voice; she can speak just fine but when she tries to sing it just cracks. That was just the first of many of scary problem yet to come. From nightmares seeping into her reality, her coughing up inedible things that shouldn’t be swallowed in the first place like glass and seashells. To having seizures everytime her mom prays with her. It’s almost as if...As if she’s possessed by a demon?
PROS: Verano did an amazing job writing this character to be a realistic as possible, We can see the regression of her state of mind; how she use to think was unstoppable and on top of the world. How Laetitia believe her only purpose in life was to sing; and once it was taken away she was thinking “well what am I supposed to do now? singing was my life. It was all I ever did so I never focused on anything else”. Which does ring true for some people. When your so laser focused on one topic you lose sight of other potential avenues. Laetitia also brings up ideas of how faith works. She was a church going girl and believed in God; but over time as her situation becomes worse she’s starting to question her beliefs. Is God testing her? Maybe all this time she was using Him as a shield to hide her Vanity? Are God and the Devil two sides of the same Coin? For a 15 year old these are some hard core questions that no one answered to, so she had to find out on her own.
Can I also say I loved how the diversity worked in this novel? She’s a unique female protagonist that just so happens to be african-american. It WASN’T shoved in face! Character personality first and her ethnic background is mentioned but not the main focus; I loved it! I also found it risky but a needed risk that the subplot was about an event that did take place a few years ago (the Zimmerman trial) however they used different names. This subplot did a good job in further making Laetitia question herself as a human and to show what kind of an environment she grew up in.
CONS: Again the adults seem to be out of touch when a child/teenager is screaming for help. At least they’re not like hippie mom from the previous book. And yet everytime Laetitia talks to someone like her mom, gramma patty, Renee or anyone they just tell her “Pray to God and thing will get better” Well she tried and she ended up puking glass!
This was pretty damn good and even though it’s a little over 300 pages it’s a fairly easy read. I would give it a 9/10
