Knitting increase cheat sheet
🧶M1R: Using R needle, lift running strand onto L needle so that it sits Eastern (with the leading leg in back), then knit it through the front leg (this is easier if you use your R needle to loosen it first, the way you do with a K2tog).
🧶M1L: Using R needle, lift running strand onto L needle so that it sits Western (with the leading leg in front), then knit it through the back loop (this is hard).
🧶RLI: Using R needle, lift R leg of the stitch BELOW the next stitch on the left needle onto the L needle, then knit it.
🧶LLI: Using L needle, lift L leg of the stitch 2 STITCHES BELOW the stitch you just knitted (i.e., not the stitch on the right needle, not the one below it, but the one below that), then knit it through the back loop.
M1L and M1R
These increases are the opposite of the increases in standard/righthanded patterns. When a pattern calls for a M1R, do a M1L and vise-versa
Knit side
M1L (Video)
Enter crossbar from back to front, knit through front loop like a regular knit stitch
M1R (Video)
Enter crossbar from front to back, knit through back loop
Purl side
A M1L purlside leans left when you're looking at the right side of the work
M1L (Video)
Enter crossbar from back to front, purl through front loop like a regular purl stitch
M1R (Video)
Enter crossbar from front to back, purl through back loop, pulling it through front loop
In an effort to learn more about how different increases behave, I've decided to knit a bunch of swatches like this:
I am especially fascinated by the lack of symmetry: Why is the left side of the triangle longer than the right side? This is not blocked or pulled on in any way; the tape is just there to keep the swatch flat enough to photograph, and to line up that line with the middle column of stitches.
I'm gonna make a pile of these and then post my results.
What other increases should I test? What are your favourite increases?
If I'm still feeling motivated when I'm done, I may do the equivalent swatches with decreases.
Silly knitting thing! M1L
I remember how to M1L with this: “She came in through the front but left through the back door.”
A make-one-left - pick up the bar between stitches with left needle from front to back, then knit through the back loop.
How to m1r and m1l, and how to never forget which is which.
