Final Baby and Me Workshops The highlights and challenges
Last week I held my final Baby and Me workshop. The focus of the last workshop was transitioning from milk to solids. Topics discussed were about weaning, baby led weaning, allergies and picky eaters. My material included WHO recommendations, Danish health authority's recommendations as well as other countries traditions in regards to complementary eating.
The previous topic was for the mothers and how they can take care of their own well being, in the midst of having a newborn. This included tips for the mothers to help boost milk supply and combat low energy with nutrition, as well as essential strength exercises to help post pregnancy bodies back into shape.
Highlights of the workshops
Børnemuseet “The Children’s Museum” has a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Kathrine the lady working there was very helpful. It was nice holding the workshops there.
There were participants that came to every workshop, despite the short notice. When holding something like this there has to be time for advertising, so there was a risk that even though I planned the workshops no one would show up to teach it - which luckily was not the case.
I was able to teach different topics that ranged from physical exercise to nutrition, thus using knowledge I have learned from school. As well as how to structure a learning session.
I was able to teach local and international mothers.
The youngest baby attending a workshop was 2 months old and the oldest were 10 months old.
Even though the target group was for mothers on maternity leave, their babies could be in theory newborn to 1 year. There is a big difference developmentally what a baby can do within this time span. In my workshop planning I had to take this into account, for example with the “Tumble and Play” workshop I found play ideas that were modifiable so that the little ones that were not as physically strong could still enjoy a game and the older ones found a challenge.
Another example was for the “Mommy Time” workshop I had to take into account during the design of the strength exercise program that even though all mothers had given birth, each mother could have a different physical need. I designed a general strength program that all women could use no matter how they gave birth and how far along they were in recovery.
All in all I feel good about the workshops I held. I learned how to structure a lesson plan and use it while teaching. I felt that even though some subjects were not my specialties that after researching and designing material to be handed out during the workshops it boosted my confidence and therefore I feel that they were successful.
