m.list | “100 ways to say ‘i love you’”
There was no way in five hells that you were going to do this, no matter how many times he whined, pleaded, and begged, you were never willingly going to jump off a bridge for Donghun.
“You’re not going to die, stop being so dramatic.” The aforementioned asshole was stood before you with his arms crossed over his chest and the most pitying look on his face. Honestly, you were pretty positive you had never seen his lips dip so far down in a frown before.
“I’m not being dramatic!” You huffed, pouting nonetheless.
“Then why are you still sitting in the car with the doors locked and your seatbelt still on.” He had you there.
The pair of you were currently arguing through the glass window of the passenger side door, him growing increasingly frustrated and you having a mild panic attack. How could you not? Just over his shoulder in the distance, people were free falling off a bridge with nothing more than a bungee rope keeping them from their death. When you had left your house this morning with an eager mind for whatever ‘super fun’ activity Donghun had in mind, this was definitely what you had pictured.
“It’s not happening, I’m sorry,” you shook your head. “You can go face death on your own I’ll be here in the air conditioning where I can’t witness you kill yourself.” Your hand was dramatically flailing about as you waved him off, eyes turned ahead toward the empty road that lead you here.
He was silent though, and with a final scowl he stalked off muttering to himself under his breath. The tension in your muscles began to dissipate at his leave and you took a sigh of relief as you let your head fall back onto the headrest, eyes shut.
There was a small pit in your stomach at having let him down, but it was his own doing that he put you two in this situation having known your fear of heights. Even when you were children you couldn’t think of going higher than four feet on the swings without getting tears in your eyes. And if you were being honest, it was a totally rational fear, one that he had no right kidnapping you into doing.
At least that’s what you believed, and you firmly stood by it. However, Donghun had other plans.
The mechanically sound of the doors unlocking left you time only to snap your eyes back open before the passenger door was swinging open. Your arms were already out in defense but the brunette had no patience for your games as he easily overpowered you. His arm crossed over you, pushing past your flailing hands and swiftly releasing you from your seatbelt before hooking around your waist.
“I swear to Gods I will never forgive you for this!” You screamed as he heaved you from the car. Your fingers were gripping harshly onto the open door but it was useless as he gave you another yank, the metal slipping from your grasp.
“You say that now, but just wait until your begging to go again,” he said with a grin even though you couldn’t see his face.
Your feet were skidding along the dirt path as he dragged you along, a single arm still wrapped around your waist and pulling you further from the safety of the car. If you weren’t so wound up in your own panic you would have been mildly impressed with the sudden showcase of his strength, but right now it was on your last nerve.
“When the fuck did you grow muscles?” You ground out as you tried to push away from him with your hands to no avail. “Seriously, did you start taking steroids or something?”
He let out a laugh at that as he hiked you back up from where you were practically hanging on his arm. “No, it’s called I go to the gym.”
“Ha! Since when? You spend practically every waking second with me,” you rolled your eyes.
“No,” he pressed. “I spend every one of your waking seconds with you. While you’re sleeping until 2 in the afternoon I’m up at 6 running around the neighborhood and working out.”
You went silent at that, letting your legs go limp for a moment which caused him to let out a guttural groan of annoyance. “That’s stupid, why the hell would you do that when you could sleep? It’s not like you have anyone to impress.”
His arm tightened around you at that and he came to an abrupt stop. “That’s it. Normally I can handle you more than I’ll ever admit, but I’ve had enough of you right about now.”
“What? What’s that supposed to– Wha– hey!” Suddenly the world was spinning around as he easily lifted you up and over his shoulder until you were practically staring at his ass from upside down.
Although you were swimming in anger right now, you couldn’t help but admire the fact that Donghun had indeed been putting in quite a few hours at the gym, his butt an obvious indication. If you weren’t currently being toted through a crowd of onlookers, you might have even gone as far as to give it a grab, but that might be pushing the lines of friendship. Not that you cared.
The two of you had the kind of relationship where boundaries were seemingly always blurred by this clear romantic tension, something neither of you ever brought up. Perhaps you had both decided to let it off as having just that strong of a friendship, regardless, nothing had ever been said and would probably never be.
As you got caught up in your thoughts and the surprising curve of Donghun’s ass, you found yourself upright once again only to realize you were caged between his arms and the railing of the bridge. His legs were rocks clamped on either side of you, his arms lingering just near your rib cage, and a cocky grin securing you defeatedly in place.
“You’ll hear from my lawyer after this,” you spat out, jutting your fist forward and straight into his chest.
“Whatever you say, Princess.” His grin broke and the familiar fullness of his smile bleared at you, admittedly melting away some of your anger for him.
However, your panic only began to rise more as your attention turned toward the small diving platform on the other side of the railing. A man was psyching himself up to the point he was practically bouncing on the metal until he was given the go. His arms spread out before him and before you could utter out a nauseous ‘oh my God’s’ he was disappearing with the echo of his yelling.
People were cheering all around you and smiles broke out on their faces. You only felt sick.
As you became lost staring blankly at the plane of Donghun’s chest, a man approached the two of you from the right with a clipboard in hand. “Lee Donghun and Y/N?”
“Yeah, that’s us,” Donghun’s voice was excited as he answered and you felt his forearms brush against your ribcage as he tensed his muscles in anticipation. Your stomach sank further.
“You’re up after this next couple, follow me so we can get you suited up.” At the man’s instructions, Donghun’s hand came to press at your back, urging you on ahead of him as if sensing your desire to run.
Following the man to the other side of the bridge, Donghun rose his hands to your shoulders and briefly rubbed his thumbs in circles to loosen you up. “You’re going to look ridiculous in that harness.”
You pursed your lips together at the jab and jutted your elbow back into his stomach, successfully earning a pained exhale from him. He cautiously left your side after that, taking a harness from the man and handing it to you before grabbing one for himself.
For a moment you stared at the jumbled mess of material in your hands then glanced up at Donghun only to find him slipping his arms into the two remaining loops. An open buckle hung from the middle of his chest but he was staring at you with a raised brow before gesturing you with his hand. “Come on, let’s see it on you.”
“I wouldn’t be caught dead prancing around in this bondage shit,” you shook your head, inching the material away from you. “Sorry, not my thing.”
“If you don’t put it on, I will,” he countered as he stretched his arm out to take it from you but you swiftly backed away.
“Whoa there buddy, I already said I’m not into bondage. You entering the picture doesn’t change that.” You shook your head and put a hand up in defense.
He rolled his eyes at you, leaning quickly towards you and taking the harness from your hands before adjusting it and squatting down. “That’s fine by me, you’re not really my type anyway.”
You dramatically gasped at that as he ducked his head in prep for the incoming smack that harshly collided with him. Despite the insult, you still stepped into the loops he had opened for your legs. However, the space between you only grew tense as he pulled the straps up your legs.
Your eyes were trained as you stared at his fingers resting on the outside juncture of your thighs and with a blush growing heatedly in your cheeks you grabbed at the material yourself. The move came just in time though as he released it himself and turned his head away, eyes not meeting yours as he busied himself with the buckle on his chest.
The two of you finished strapping up in silence until the instructor returned and began to guide you toward the platform.
The mood between the two of you dissipated as quickly as it had come as Donghun’s hands found your shoulders once more. “You getting nervous there, Princess?”
His tone was teasing but you were quickly tumbling back into the nausea that had caught you earlier. “I think I’m gonna throw up.”
“Okay but either do it now or afterward because I would prefer to not have your McDonalds all over me.” You shot him a nasty glare but he a playful grin on his lips as he ushered you along.
The instructor came to a stop at the platform and turned back to the two of you with a wide smile. “Excited?”
“Definitely,” Donghun nodded eagerly but you remained silent.
“Awesome,” the instructor beamed, glancing at his clipboard than back up. “Are you two going solo or together?”
At the word ‘solo’ you tensed immediately. It hadn’t occurred to you that you would be doing this without Donghun there for the entire thing, but the panic was short lived as he laughed from behind you. “Together. Definitely together.”
“Alright, then we’ll just hook you up and then you can step over,” the man explained, gesturing for the two of you to stand just before the small step ladder. “We’ll give you a green light and then you’ll be free to jump whenever you’re ready.”
“Cool,” Donghun nodded with his smile stretching his features wide.
A team of two people were quickly making work of connecting the two of you together and hooking your connected harnesses onto the bungee cord. In seconds you were being given the okay to step over the bridge, but you were rock solid in place.
“Come on,” Donghun chided you with a surprising gentleness. “I’m right here, nothing’s going to happen.”
You swallowed hard at his words and looked up at him through glassy eyes. He offered you an encouraging smile and leaned in to wrap his arms over your shoulders in a tight hug that you quickly returned. His chest vibrated as he laughed at you, but with a long exhale you released him and met his eyes with a new found determination.
“I’m literally going to shit myself and probably cry myself to sleep tonight, but let's do this.” Your voice was enveloped in finality and your words had him chuckling but he nodded nonetheless.
Suddenly the two of you were standing on the metal platform, chests pressed firmly together as the instructors tightened your harnesses even more. It almost felt like you were suffocating but it was a pain you would take if it meant keeping you from dying.
Donghun’s neck was craned so he could keep his eyes trained on you after noticing how tense your entire body had gone. With one hand holding onto the railing of the bridge, he rose his other to pat you on the head in reassurance.
“It’s alright, you can do this,” he encouraged you with a silly grin.
On the other hand, you could practically hear your heartbeat in your ears and you had broken into a nervous sweat. Your vision was bright and you could feel yourself going lightheaded, the only thing keeping you stable was the harness hooking you to Donghun.
With a shaky breath, you looked up at your friend with quivering lips. “Hey, I know this is probably going to sound really dumb, but,” you laughed nervously, dropping your gaze from his with a blush. “Can I hold your hand?”
He let out a sudden laugh and nodded, letting his free hand trail down your arm. His fingers lit goosebumps all over your skin as they passed over your forearm before meeting your palm where he wiggled his fingers between yours. He gave your hand a firm squeeze and ran his thumb over the back of your palm just as you were given the green light.
“Ready?” He breathed out.
“Not at all,” you responded faintly.
“Good.”
A scream curdled from your throat as you were suddenly being thrust off the bridge, your free arm flying to grab onto Donghun as gravity took over and sent you hurtling toward the river below. There was a wild laugh leaving Donghun’s lips and he lifted his free arm out as the water neared.
Your grip on him tightened inhumanely as the bungee cord sprung you back up, your stomach churning as the wind whipped your hair all over the place.
“Open your eyes!” Donghun yelled out, forcing you to realize that in all the panic you had squeezed them shut.
With a silent countdown, you opened your eyes once again to see that the river was drawing closer, but your attention diverted to Donghun who was smiling wildly. His free arm was drawn forward as if to reach for the water only to have it abruptly torn away at the cord jumped again.
Only this time he dragged his hand twined with yours out too, forcing you to become free from the death grip you had tensed yourself into. Your palms split apart and left room for air to breeze through the crevices, tickling at your skin.
At that moment, staring at your intertwined fingers and gazing back at the man you were harnessed to, the butterflies in your stomach settled into a different kind. The fear you had been so adamantly gripping onto began to dissolve into a rush of adrenaline that lead you to free your hand from his and spread it out into the air.
The action left Donghun howling into the wind, a delighted laugh pulling from his lips and a smile creasing his eyes into crescents. A smile of your own bubbled up and suddenly you were throwing your head back at the cord continued to throw the pair of you up and down.
By the time the bouncing had ceased and you were hanging like bats upside down, you both were giggling messes. Your arms had returned to hold onto him but in a hug of gratitude. It was true, you never would have done this without him.
“I’m so proud of you,” he grinned, teeth blaring. “I never thought I would be able to get you to do this.”
“Yeah, well,” you rolled your eyes, laughing as well. “Sometimes you do stupid things for the people you care about.”
He let out another laugh and shook his head at you. “Cute. I appreciate it.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” you huffed, digging your nails into his back briefly.
The pully at the top kicked into gear and the two of you began to make your ascent back up to the metal platform. Donghun lifted his arms to ruffle at your hair, an action that you quickly swiped your hand at, but he nudged you away.
Suddenly both of his hands were on your head, cupping your cheeks just along your jawbone, his eyes still smiling as they trained intently on you. “Thank you for this.”
“What are you thanking me for? You’re the one who forced me into it,” you looked at him incredulously.
“No I didn’t,” he shook his head, another grin forming as he pushed his helmet against yours. “You did it all on your own, all I did was ask.”
His voice was playful as he spoke and you were far too enveloped in his words to realize he was leaning in far closer than need be. By the time you were registering his proximity his lips were already on yours, molding to you and pressing with an emotion you could feel down to your toes. His thumbs drew in circles at your temples as he sighed into your mouth, only you couldn’t reciprocate before he left you with a final peck, a smile drawing over his lips.
You couldn’t say a word, though, the cord having pulled you up to the top now and leaving you dangling until the instructors turned you right side up. Within seconds you were being guided back over the railing in a daze, eyes trailing after Donghun’s back in wonder.
It was when he turned back around to look at you, a sly smile peeking at you from the corner of his mouth that you steeled your eyes.
“You total asshole!” You shouted, sprinting forward and jumping onto his back with a heavy smack to his head. “You planned this all along, didn’t you! Oh my God’s you are going to get it!”
