So, Without further delay, let’s dive in from the basics to advanced-

Definition of Riveted Joints-

Riveted joints are those that can not weld or join by any means other than using rivets causing permanent joints of two separated components, known as Rivets Joints.

This can be the basic definition of Rivet joints, now let’s move to the types of rivets joints. So, Here we go-

Types of Riveted Joints-

Mainly Two types of riveting joints are used while riveting any metal sheets-

(I) Lap Joint Rivet

(II) Butt Joint Rivet

Lap Joint Rivet-

Lap joint rivet is done by Overlapping metal sheets from the corner side.

When a Single straight line of rivets is used in the lap joint, then it is called a Single row lap joint.

When a Double straight line is used to join two metal sheet corners in a lap joint, Known as a Double-row lap joint.

When a Double line of rivets is placed in the zig-zag dimension, then it is called a Double-row zig-zag lap joint.

Butt Joint Rivet-

When two metal sheet joints side by side together facing in the same direction, Knowm as Butt Joint.

When the jointing side of metal sheets comes together, then riveting is done by placing a piece of the sheet above the metal sheet.

This piece of sheet is known as Strap.

If a Single strap is used in butt riveting, then it is called a Single strap butt joint.

And, When a Double strip is used to riveting the butt joint, then it is called a Double strap butt joint.

When the single row of rivets and the single strap is used on both metal sheets i butt joint, then it is known as single-row single strap butt joint.

When the single row of rivets and two-strap is used on both metal sheets to fastening the butt joint, then it is known as the Single row double strap butt joint.

And, when two rows of rivets and the double strap is used on both metal sheets of butt joint, then it is called Double row double strap butt joint.

In special cases, Triple-riveted joints are used in both types of joints.

Failure of Riveted joint-

Here are some types of failure in riveted joints, This will help you to understand the possible cause of riveted joint failure.

Bearing failure

Net-tension failure

shear-out failure

Cleavage Failure

Cleavage-tension failure

Bolt Failure

Fastener Failure

Pull-through Failure

Above mentioned reasons are the main sources of Riveted joint failure.

The Importance of Shop and Hand Tool Training

Preseason is a great time to sharpen up your skills, especially in safety. During build season, you may be working a lot in the shop or with tools, cutting and drilling pieces for your robot. However, the machines you need to use can be dangerous if not used safely. So, it is really important to get properly educated in many areas: safety procedures, how to use various machines, handtool safety, and do’s and don’t’s of the shop. You can get trained by a mentor that works in the shop a lot. 

A few reminders:

Be sure to know your point of contact in case of emergency. 

Never work alone. 

Make sure your clothes are safe (long pants, no sweatshirt strings, hair tied back, closed toe shoes etc.)

Wear proper protection equipment (safety glasses, gloves when needed, etc.)

Have basic working knowledge about the different machines.

Know where first aid is.

For our team, Chuck, our main shop mentor, takes groups of girls to the shop. He teaches them all the rules and procedures related to the shop and quizzes them along the way. All girls are required to go through the training each year before build season. 

Machine shops and tools are incredible assets to have during build season. Train and learn so you can make full use of them. Have fun, you’ve got this!
