The MIL-STD-2073-1E revision outlines the Department of Defenses standard practice and processes for military packaging as distinct from commercial packaging. This standard covers methods of preservation to protect material against environmentally induced corrosion and deterioration, physical and mechanical damage, and other forms of degradation during storage, multiple handling, and shipment of material in the defense transportation system.

THE TWO DISTINCT PACKAGING CATEGORIES FOR MILITARY EQUIPMENT

The first category would consist of items that are not entering the military distribution system, and are for immediate use or that are not mission capable use standard commercial packaging options.

The appearance of finished wrapping materials that are coated or impregnated shall not contain any voids in the coating or substrates (see 4.3.2.2). The material shall be clean and free from holes, tears, cuts, sharp creases, wrinkles, or other imperfections. The treated carrier shall be cut and trimmed of any selvage (see 4.3.2.1). On crepe material, bursting strength value shall be obtained with specimen stretched. Crepe requirements shall be 50 percent of flat.

The Importance of MIL-STD-129

Military Standard 129 (MIL-STD-129) is the military marking for shipment and storage approved and used by the Department of Defense. Military shipping labels are like a shipment’s fingerprint; they can identify various aspects of the cargo. Depending on the shipment, and where it’s going, a contractor may have to fulfill various labeling requirements.

Common Label Requirements:

• 2D (PDF417) bar code • Linear (Code 39) bar code • NSN/NATO stock number • CAGE code • PN or P/N (part number) • Item description • Quantity and UI • Contract number or purchase order number • PIIN • Four digit delivery order or call number • Modification for change order number • Military preservation method and date of unit preservation • Shelf life • Serial number • TCN • Hazmat markings

Accuracy Matters

The military is constantly receiving large shipments of supplies and equipment from various contractors around the world. MIL-STD-129 requirements help the DoD track those items through the distribution process efficiently and accurately.

One of the most important logistical elements to consider before labeling a shipment is how long the supplies/equipment must be stored. If the shipment is not properly labeled, it can be stopped midway and identified as “frustrated freight.” The shipment would need further inspection and labeling corrections before resuming its journey — a costly oversight.

It Wasn’t Always Easy

The importance of military packaging is quite simple: preservation. It’s been that simple since the military started shipping supplies to soldiers. But it’s never been that easy. It took decades to modernize military packaging.

During World War II, defense leaders quickly realized failure to protect equipment or supplies could lead to unfavorable missions. The packaging of the past wasn’t going to cut it. What worked domestically, didn’t work for military purposes. In order for soldiers to be battlefield ready, equipment and supplies needed to be protected at all costs.

Lessons Learned from WWII

In the early 1940s, in the midst of World War II, both the Army and Navy suffered major supply loses overseas, according to the Defense Logistics Agency. Water damage proved to be a detriment to our troops, but a lesson was learned. The military started seriously talking about updating shipping methods to a more efficient process.

Shortly after the attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941, semblances of military standards started popping up for canned goods shipped overseas. By early 1945, talks of making military packaging specifications more uniform started taking shape, but not without its challenges over the years.

Modernized Specifications

The history of military packaging is riddled with hurdles and complications, but over the decades those hardships have helped standardize Military Spec Packaging (MIL-SPEC) requirements. Below are some of the most common MIL-SPEC codes:
