Holy fuckballs!! Happy 30th, Like A Prayer || March 21, 1989 || This was the album that saved/changed my life. I had just turned 12 years old when it was released. My parents had abruptly uprooted us mid-school year and moved us back to the DR. I was suddenly enrolled in Catholic school in a hyper-conservative country and I was not having the best time adjusting. More importantly, I was trying to grapple with knowing that I liked boys. Up until this point the only thing I knew about being gay was that we were all screaming fem queens, an abomination and we’re all gonna die of AIDS. I was in such deep fear of AIDS and I just convinced myself that I was going to get it and die. When I got my hands on this cassette, the first thing I noticed was that it smelled like patchouli, the second thing I noticed was that it came with a pamphlet entitled The Facts About AIDS. It was the first piece of rational information on the disease I had seen, it became a lifeline and I read it over and over again. The album itself was nothing short of her masterpiece. It was the first album that affected me on a much deeper level from beginning to end. I got goosebumps and I still get them listening to Like A Prayer. I loved the self-empowering message behind Express Yourself in all its brassy glory. The sweetness of Cherish, the sadness of Oh Father, Prince’s guitar playing and their never released duet, Promise To Try, the first, saddest and probably most intimate song about the death of her mother, all of it. It was beyond relevant and revolutionary for 12 year old gay me - especially in this new environment I was in. I felt very alone and this album was my raft - and the raft of a lot of young gay boys. I can never stress or properly articulate how this album affected me. I knew I was in it for the long haul and it was truly when I started loving this woman and seeing her as not just a pop star, but a mother figure as well.
