The slap resonates through the restaurant, causing patrons to stop and look in your direction. Your hand stings from the impact but nothing is more telling than the red hand print on Jongin’s turned cheek. Your breathing is heavy, fuelled by anger, and you glare coldly at the man you had just struck.

“How dare you speak to me like that.” You ground out through gritted teeth as you stand straight with your head held high. “The audacity that you have to think you can come in here and say such things then expect me to follow you.” He turns to meet your glare, looking deathly calm despite how irritated you look. “You forget who I am and who I’m married to.”

He waits for you to finish, lets you yell and cause a scene because at the end of the day, none of that matters. It doesn’t matter if you are the Queen of the Underworld, that your husband is the King and would cut out his tongue for speaking ill of him to his beloved wife. It doesn’t matter if Jongin had proof of your husband’s infidelities, proof that you are in grave danger because some whore got her claws into the man who swore to love you until death do you part.

Because death will be the reason you part. A death orchestrated by your own husband.

But you don’t want to hear that, hear such truths while out with friends, or women who pretend to be your friend so that they can bask in the glory that comes with being close to you.

“You’re in danger.” He simply states, reaching for you but you pull away, not making this easy on him. “Please, if we don’t hurry-”

Your stubbornness is beginning to wear down his patience. Jongin has been nothing but a faithful soldier to you and you alone. Why couldn’t you see that he was only trying to protect you?

When the door is kicked open, your husband pointing a finger at you and shouting an order for his men to grab you, Jongin grabs you in your moment of surprise and drags you quickly for the back door. “Well, you’re coming with me, whether you like it or not.”

The sounds of bullets being fired causes you to snap out of your surprise and begin to rush with him. He needs to get to safety, he needs to make sure that you are unharmed and then when he knows that he can leave you alone - Jongin is going to kill him for daring to threaten your life.

“This is complete bullshit.” Jongin curses under his breath as he tries pull the doors apart while you just lean against the wall, inspecting your nails. “Are you going to fucken help or are you just going to stand there?”

You sigh, dropping your hand. “Stand here. I don’t know why you’re even trying. You and I both know that those doors would take two men to pull apart and honestly, I’m not wasting this manicure because you expect me to do grunt work.”

Jongin’s jaw ticks, he takes off his suit jacket, tossing it at you and you scoff as you watch him roll up his sleeves to his elbows and try again. “Well,” he grunts out, exerting a lot of energy trying to pull one door, “at least you get what you wanted.”

“And what’s that?” You ask, attitude dripping off each word.

He stops, pushing that one stray lock of hair off his forehead before turning to you with a smirk. “You finally get me alone.”

You laugh in disbelief, throwing his jacket back at his with force, only for him to drop it to the ground. “Did you hit your head recently? Why would I want you alone?”

“Why are you here then?”

“Jongin, sweetie, listen clearly so you don’t get things twisted. I came here for the exact same reason you did - to try and resolve this issue that our parents put us both in. There is no ulterior motive other than getting myself out of this mess; the fact that it’s you I have to negotiate a deal with is nothing more than a cruel twist of fate because you happen to be in the exact same position I’m in.” As you talk, Jongin moves closer and closer until you’re backed up against the wall with him caging you in. You don’t allow him to try and intimidate you, to get you flustered and stumbling over your words; in fact, you lift your chin up in defiance and stare him straight in the eyes. “You don’t want this wedding, just like I don’t want you.”

Jongin leans forward, licking his lips as he looks over your face. “Hmm, I mean, I could get used to that temper of yours. I’m far from ready to settle down but I’d make the exception - even if we have been fighting each other for years now.”

“Don’t be an idiot, Jongin. We’d kill each other the first night.” His lips are now touching yours, your heart racing because you don’t know what to do with his teasing.

Just when you think he’s about to claim your lips, pull you completely under the spell that he’s cast upon you in the small elevator - it begins to move again. “Maybe,” he smirks and pulls away, “but that’s the thrill of it, I guess.”
