mageofduck replied to your post: request: stop making james a homophobe...
the sad thing too though is with the rest of what little character he’s given in the book and the times, that kind of action would fit perfectly and it’s upsetting
i guess as with all things it can go either way... i used to really, really hate james for the longest time based on the pensieve scene in the last book bc he was picking on someone for fun, like, what the fuck
on the other hand his reasons for it could have been "this person just became part of a racist, terrorist murdering group, and associates with people who have attempted to kill and harass the students who are the targets of this racist group, im gonna harangue them as punishment" which makes more sense, even though in the situation its not doing any good in terms of trying to fix the issue
so we just dont know completely what was up with him. he did save snape during that one incident so he had some moral standing, implied, but we also know he's bigheaded and pompous like sirius, also at times bordering on harassment with his incessant behavior towards lily, also as well all know more people in that time were homophobic so thats against it too.
ANYWAYS this wasnt supposed to be a discussion of logic behind it i just got into it. from my idealized standpoint on this i think james wasnt/wouldnt be a homophobe seeing as when one of his best friends was revealed to be a werewolf (which jk rowling has stated to be an allegory to people with HIV, and this is around the time people were intensely biased against it for its association with gay people, which didnt quite follow through in the allegory), he and his friends dropped everything and became animagi to help their friend out, not shunning or ignoring him
beyond this as a pureblood family at that point of time he also wasnt prejudiced against muggleborns, so thats another part of his character that can argue he, given some time to digest, would accept homosexuality and wouldnt react negatively to it
end note: why is that whenever im given nary a moment to talk about potter i write a useless essay that serves to help no one
