(A woman stands C wearing headphones. She is not listening to music. Standing. Very long pause. Very still.) I remember being like eight years old. Probably younger but I can’t ever really be sure with like pinpointing ages in these memories. But I was probably like eight. And we were at the Ranch and it was real real late. We were staying with grandma. No I was staying with grandma, because this kind of stuff never happened when you were there. But it was late, and I remember the window was open in that spare room we always stayed in and it was just too cold and too dark. And I was still always using a nightlight, because I was so little. And I remember walking to Grandma’s room and tapping her sleeping shoulder in her freezing room and she was instantly angry at me. Instantly angry at her grandchild for waking her up. I was scared and cold, because the house was so old and I was just sure that the place was full of ghosts ready to stoop low over me the moment I close my eyes. And she yelled at me. She said that thing, that “Chrissakes” thing that she always did. Like she was retired, why was it a big deal if her visiting grandchild couldn’t sleep. I asked to sleep with her and she was just. Pissed. she was pissed off at me, and I knew I wanted to go home. I just wanted to go home. I wanted to call mom and dad and go home. When I asked if I could call them, she actually laughed at me. She laughed at me and told me to just be quiet and get into bed with her and just let her get some “goddamn sleep.” I remember laying there in that freezing room next to her and crying in the dark until I finally fell asleep. The next morning she fed me expired grapenuts. How fucking difficult would it have been for her to buy some fucking cheerios for her grandchild. I just. I just don’t want to go. I know that you get it and you’re sympathetic and you understand, but I’m just so. just so angry. I am so angry at her. She was never a good part of our lives, I think it’s unfair for her to ask this of us on top of everything else. I want to be there for mom. I do. But I don’t know if it’ll be any help. I think I may just get in the way. When are you getting in. Ok. ok fine. Yeah. I land. I land just a few minutes after. Just stay in the terminal and we can grab food before dad gets there. Yeah I love you too. At least I get to see you guys. Ok. We’re boarding. see you soon.
