I’m not exactly the evil villain type of character in life, yet I find myself drawn to this new song from Magic Bronson, named Evil Plans. Despite its malevolent name, the Los Angeles indie band has returned with a easy swaying, contagious ambling indie pop ditty, saturated with a light step and much verdant instrumentals. The raconteurs tell a tale of a troubled teen on the track, delving into dark themes regarding bullying and vengeance. There’s no dilly dallying around the seriousness of this song’s subject matter. In fact, many of us have probably been in a situation where we’ve been hurt by our peers, or been the source of such torment. Magic Bronson reminds us with their airy swinging tune to be kind to one another, because you never know when you’d be sewing the seeds for some true evil plans. Evil Plans comes on the heels of last month’s Night Owl, a rambunctious whirring, gritty slinking alt tune which can be streamed below.

Funky electro-pop forms the foundation for Magic Bronson’s music, a circus of creativity anchored through unique pop hooks. Magic Bronson teeter on a fulcrum of indie rock and dance pop, branching off freely with genre-melding ease. It’s interesting how LA-based duo is able to pull off this balance and it gives their songs wider appeal while simultaneously opening up for experimentation. Threads of hip hop, reggae and R&B take turns playing lead in Magic Bronson’s sonic stew, though they’re careful to not lose a core sound of percussive, breezy rock/pop while putting these puzzles together. Influences aside, Magic Bronson’s tunes are always catchy, often off guard, taking the mind on a journey without ever losing a tapping toe or shimmying shoulder.
