somehow, her magical abilities had been the stuff of song and disbelief among the richer houses. it was the common people who knew what she was capable of firsthand, because those were the folks whom she was primarily serving. she never denied a person when it came to helping them with a problem. she heard the sharp noise emanating from another person in the park. when no one else was there, jenny approached, and she did not hesitate to continue. "have you suffered a wound, good person?" jenny inquired, blinking her pretty eyes. "you are not in need of other care. i can tend to the gash on your hand." jenny hovered her fingers over the injury and focused. soon, the gash was completely healed up. "... i hope that you do not intend to suffer a wound again?" jenny found herself teasing with a well-meaning smile.

Freya had somewhat EXPECTED the henchman or two from her aunt trying to find her. The woman obsessed over power, and to her Freya was just another battery. Just like Hope would be if she got her hands on the baby. “I’ll warn you,” She said to the trio of men who had been on her tail for too long now. “I’m armed.” She turned around, a snap of her wrist and they collapsed to the ground. Then, she felt a new presence that didn’t match the expression of her aunt’s minions. “My apologizes.” She told them. “They aren’t actually dead.” Not yet, at least.

Summary: Virgil’s healing magic demands universal balance. Logan knows this for a fact, and he knows that Virgil will do whatever it takes to save them anyway. Fantasy!AU ficlet. LAMP/CALM angst with hopeful ending.

Warnings: blood, angst, magic of the healing variety, violence, Logan is an archer and shoots bad guys, characters-near-death, characters being reckless, elements of self-sacrifice, tears/crying, swords, passing out/fainting, orcs, whump elements. Please let me know if I missed anything. 

Author’s Note: This idea didn’t come out quite like I pictured it, but sometimes that’s just how it goes with writing. Just a small idea that popped in my head, and was encouraged to write it by the lovely @creativenostalgiastuff, so have this little diddy. Mixed feelings about how this came out, but like I said. Just meant to be a small little thing. Hope you enjoy! No taglist for now since this is just a small thing and I’m not jazzed with the outcome, but perhaps I’ll add it back in later!

Logan doesn’t know what pulls his attention from the group of bandits he’d been getting a bead on with the tip of his arrow: Virgil’s broken, strangled cry, or the flash of purple light from the valley below. They happen simultaneously. They both freeze the blood in Logan’s hands and still them against his bow. His gaze flashes over towards the purple light.

“Virgil!” he shouts, or thinks he does, as he drops from out of the tree and rolls to his feet. Wet autumn leaves cling to his vest and trousers. He can hear the clashing of metal against metal like distant nails on a chalkboard, slicing through the otherwise serene forest around them. He skids to a stop at the top of the valley. He breathes in, his mouth filling with dirt, sweat, and the faint metallic scent of copper.

Orc blood smells sweet, Logan remembers distantly from his research. It’s human blood that smells like metal.

Logan flexes his grip around the bow and raises it again as his eyes flit across the scene below him. A blur of white and red further down the alley—an anguished cry from the figure that reverberates in Logan’s skull not for its volume but for its desperation—charges towards towering, dark figures. Logan pulls the string back, aims, releases.

A soft thwick. A heavy but distant thunk.

There is another flash of bright purple light across the valley, glowing steadily from behind a boulder that blocks the archer’s view. Logan grits his teeth and slings the bow across his back before deftly scaling down the rocky cliffside of the valley as fast as he is able. He barely notices when a particularly sharp edge slices through the black bracer and breaks the skin of his palm.

His feet hit the ground and Logan whirls around. There is less wind down here.

With calculated precision, Logan’s gaze scans the situation around him. His stomach gives an unexpected lurch when his gaze settles on the boulder across the valley—when he sees Patton’s unconscious form on the ground to the left of the rock, and the blood that is blossoming darkly across his light blue and white tunic.

The purple glow brightens from behind it, and Logan takes off at a sprint towards him.

“Virgil!” he shouts, but he knows his plea will fall on deaf ears. “Stop!”

Logan curses his lack of athleticism. He wishes he was faster. He can hear Roman shouting something, but he can’t make it out. Logan’s own blood is rushing through his ears at the sight of Patton’s pooling under him and Logan nearly slips on the wet leaves that blanket the ground as he runs.

“Virgil!” Logan tries again as he appears around the boulder—finally—and is met with the sight of the very thing he’d feared.

Virgil stands with his dark cloak torn in places, his face red and streaked with tears. He has both of his hands out over Patton’s form, a bright glyph floating in the space between his hands and Patton on the ground. It illuminates the space around them like an ever-present burst of violet lightning. It makes Virgil’s eyes look wild and terrified. It reflects in the tears at the corner of his dark eyes.

“Virgil,” Logan says again. He swallows. He holds his hands out towards him. He tries not to look at Patton. “Virgil, you have to stop.”

Logan can see the toll it is already taking. Even swallowed by his cloak, Logan can see the tremble in Virgil’s hands and the color draining from his face. His bangs are plastered to his forehead with sweat.

“I can heal him,” Virgil grits out between clenched teeth. “I can do it.”

Logan feels something constrict his chest. “That is a fatal wound,” Logan says, but the voice doesn’t sound like his own.

Virgil’s healing magic is directly tied to his life force. That had been the first thing Logan had learned about it when he met Virgil years ago. However much energy it would take the body to heal naturally over a period of time would be sucked from Virgil in the shorter span through his healing glyph. The life energy needed to heal it was channeled through the glyph, sapping from Virgil in a short time span rather than from the victim over a longer period of time. It was the universe’s way of maintaining balance.

It doesn’t take Logan long to calculate the cost to Virgil of healing a fatal wound. He would be extremely unlikely to survive it. When Logan raises his hand again towards him, he’s distantly surprised to find them shaking.

“He wouldn’t want this!” Logan takes a step closer. He can almost reach him now.

Virgil shakes his head. “I can’t lose him, Logan!” He’s swaying.

“We can’t lose you, either—” Logan tries, but he sees the glyph flicker and it’s nothing but pure instinct that makes Logan lunge forward. He catches Virgil against his chest as the healer collapses.

Virgil is pale and clammy against him, his skin no longer illuminated by the unnatural purple glow. In the abrupt silence that ricchoetes through the forest around him, Logan can hear the shallow, fast breaths that wheezes in and out of Virgil’s lungs.

Logan looks up, his heart in his throat that lodges the panicked cry that wants to wrench from his lungs. He hears footsteps rushing towards them through the leaves that litter the valley floor. Logan grits his teeth and pulls a dagger from Virgil’s boot, keeping him protectively but clumsily against his chest, and aims it carefully. His world is blurring around the edges but it is crystal clear in the tunnel through which Logan is staring. He readies himself for the dark, rancid, looming figure of an Orc to appear around the boulder.

He is met, instead, with a white prince suit and a shredded red sash, both of which are splattered dark with something that smells sweet. Orc blood.

Roman stumbles to a stop at the sight before him. His sword slips from his grip to the ground. The metallic clatter is cushioned slightly by the leaves on the ground.

“Is… Are they…” The question chokes in Roman’s raw throat.

Logan swallows and averts his gaze. He tosses the dagger to the side and eases Virgil gently down on to the damp ground beneath him. He is careful of Virgil’s head. Roman doesn’t move.

Logan looks at the prince more closely. There’s a dark spot on his left sleeve that seems to be growing in dampness and size. “Roman,” he says, to break him out of his stricken stupor. Roman’s wide eyes flash over to him. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine,” Roman answers automatically. Logan suspects it’s more instinct than answer.

“You appear to be injured.”

“It’ll….” Roman’s voice catches. He coughs to clear it. “It’ll heal.” The words still come out strained. “Logan, tell me they’re okay.”

Logan turns away and kneels between Virgil and Patton, both prone on the valley floor. Logan hates it when Roman says things like that. Logan was not one to lie. Not intentionally. It bothered him when Roman asked any of them to tell him something that may not even be true. It seemed… counterproductive. Patton had tried to explain to him once, saying that Roman said those things sometimes precisely because he knew Logan wouldn’t lie to him. So if Logan could tell him it was okay, then it must be.

He’s just looking for some reassurance, kiddo, Patton had said to him that night.

The reminder of Patton hardens the lump in Logan’s throat.

The archer shakes his head quickly. Focus on situational assessment, he tells himself sternly. He brushes the back of his hand against his blurring vision and hopes that Roman doesn’t notice. If he does, he doesn’t call him out on it. For that, Logan is grateful.

Patton’s wounds have closed. That’s the first thing Logan checks. It doesn’t surprise him, exactly. He hadn’t been watching Virgil’s healing process, but he knew from previous experience of watching Virgil work that closing the wound was usually the first thing the magic did. He didn’t have any way to assess internal damage. At least not here.

It’s not until Logan has placed a hand on Patton’s chest that he realizes there’s a slight rise and fall to it. Patton is breathing.

Patton is breathing.

Logan’s grip in Patton’s blood-soaked shirt tightens. “Patton?” he asks. Behind him, he hears Roman take in a sharp breath. Logan presses two shaking fingers to Patton’s neck. Faintly, he can feel it. A pulse.

Patton doesn’t respond. But he’s has a pulse. That’s something. That’s more than something.

Logan doesn’t let go of his grip in Patton’s shirt, but he looks at Virgil on the other side of him. His breath is still fast. Still shallow. Still there.

“He did it,” Logan finds himself saying, even if he hasn’t quite wrapped his head around it. He stands up. His hands are both bloody now—one his own , the other is Patton’s—but he doesn’t care. He locks eyes with Roman. “They have a chance. We have to move.”

Roman smiles weakly with relief and nods. He grabs his sword from his feet, slides it into the sheath, and lifts Virgil into his arms as Logan gathers Patton’s form in his. If they could get back to the city in time, then they didn’t have to lose either one of them. Logan would certainly have some choice words to share with Virgil, but for now, Logan figures he can just be grateful he’ll have that opportunity.

His hands have stopped shaking. Logan decides that can be enough for now.

Hope doesn’t hear a heartbeat of a wolf or well, her mother and it was then that she just wanted to lay there and hope that whatever takes her.
