Realizations after reading Maid by @stepville: I grew up solidly middle-class, not lower MC as I had thought. My tough years (when I lost my apartment, $ super tight) I had family/friends who loaned me money, took me in. I have more prejudices against poor people than I thought (always knew I had strong negative feelings about super-rich people, but didn’t realize I have some biases against poor people). Even though I put myself through college and grad school working and getting loans, I always had a safety net. (Plus, it cost $5-6K/year, not $50K) I had no idea there was so much paperwork involved in getting government assistance, or how much of it is a catch-22. Not having kids, I have always thought single parents rock. What I never got/felt was the intense worry that never lets up.
