Dawn’s very first friend was Leona. In the small town of Twinleaf, the majority of the population consisted of older couples or rich folks trying to settle out in the country, all avoiding the rush of city life. As such, meeting Leona was an absolute joy.

It happened on an early fall day, the first day of preschool.

"I’m Leona," the other girl introduced.

"I’m Hikari," came the reply.

Leona cocked her head. “What kinda name is that?! It’s pretty. Hickory?!”

"Hikari."

"Hecaree?"

"… Hikari."

Leona pouted. “… can I call you Dawn instead?”

The small child tilted her head. “Okay.”

And, the rest is history.

A bit winded from taking Misty the togekiss out for a bit of exercise, Dawn laid down on the couch of her mother's home. "Who was it from?"

Her blue eyes widened when Johanna answered--it was Ash.

How long had it been since she'd seen him? Nearly a year, she believed. She sat up, grinning. Perhaps Ester heard Ash's name and drew the connection between him and pikachu, because the buneary came bouncing into the living room.

"Neary?!"

"Yeah, Mom--what'd he call about? Is he done in Unova? Is he alright?"
