Mairea

Intertwined outtake: Mairea chapter 1
I won’t be using this for Intertwined anymore since Shannan has been replaced with another character. I loved Shannan but it’s for the best. I’m also not really satisfied with this chapter, since the stuff that I wrote for my other main characters Shogo and Ryuu, is better. I will write you a good first chapter in the future, Mairea. Now I’ll focus on getting Shogo’s story together first >.<.
A stone flies right past my red curls. I knew it was meant for me before he picked it up. This isn’t fair. It’s three versus one.
I swallow my words because I know what they are thinking. Fatty, lighthouse, bitch. I can hear every insult even if they don’t say it out loud. I kick the stone as I run towards the forest. My hands are busy holding up the layers of my maxi skirt. It doesn’t keep the mud from splattering all over my boots and the bottom of my skirt. Still, I’d rather have mud than blood on me. “Where are you going, Mairea?” the leader asks. I don’t know what to say. Why can’t they just leave me alone? Does that fat pig really think she can outrun us? I swallow. It feels like there’s something stuck in my throat. I push back the tears. Crying will only make it worse. “Answer us, bitch! No wonder you have no friends. Are you retarded or something?” one of the other kids asks. I know I’m not normal. It will never be quiet in my head. I hear all these voices. From whispers to screams. Sometimes I don’t know what they mean, sometimes I don’t want to know what they mean. They guide me towards the light or they keep me in the dark. But they’re always there. “I’m sorry”, I stutter. I just want to ease their minds so mine will be more at ease. What a weirdo! She’s so helpless that it’s pathetic. They’re right. I’m nothing. I’m an ugly, fat know-it-all, who doesn’t even know that much. I’m worthless.
The trees surround us. It’s as if they are nearing in with every step I take. Rays of sunshine peak through the leaves. The boy and two girls are still behind me. One of my classmates steps on a branch. She thinks about throwing it at me. I can’t run fast enough to hide behind trees, so I stop running. When I turn around I see that she has already picked up the heavy branch. I’ve got her. “I’m sorry”, I whisper again. I drop my skirt to the ground, so the ends fall into the dirt. I close my eyes, preparing for the pain. Then I hear the flapping of wings. Leave Mairea alone! Familiar feathers have come to greet me. Shannan’s wings are spread wide. The owl screeches. For a moment I see the owl goddess Dia within him, an ancient force this land worships to this day. He flaps his wings close to their faces. Stop being so mean.
My classmate tries to swing the heavy branch towards him. Oh dear. “Aw-“ I stumble. “He really doesn’t want to hurt you.” Shannan turns on her. I can’t accept what they did to Mairea. His head leans towards her, ready to peck. Okay, maybe he does have an intention to hurt her. “Shannan, please-“ I give the branch a little kick. My classmates try to defend themselves from the tiny terror. They shield their faces with their hands but I’m afraid it won’t protect them against his claws. That witch! She’s controlling that owl. The two boys take a few steps back, leaving the girl in the front. I have to get out of here. This is getting bad. “Shannan, tha- that’s enough!” The two boys run away without looking back. I extend my arm before Shannan lands on it. He doesn’t seem as big as before. Shannan probably isn’t much bigger than the palm of my hand.
“I’m bleeding!” my classmate screams. “You-“ I bite my lip. “I’m sorry”, I mumble. I look down. Shannan nuzzles my cheek to comfort me. How can I stay angry at this little fluffball?
“This isn’t over!” My heart jumps a little when I see her walk away. I really hope she’s okay. Although I realise that I wouldn’t have been if it were for her.
I’m sorry it took me so long. You are pretty far out in the forest.
I smile at Shannan.
