Sheila's Retro Beef Curry (circa 1974), from What Katie Ate
+ Recommendation: Make Me Now!
+ Serve with: A bib to wipe the drool from your chops! Sliced banana, coriander, naan, toasted peanuts and a healthy dollop of greek/natural yoghurt also work well.
+ Food consumption environment: On the couch, on my own. I'd like to say that I tried to wait for the carpenter to come home from the gym, but if I did I'd be lying to myself (and you), and that's just unfair on everyone.
+ Topic of conversation thoughts: Should I have a small bowl now and then another small bowl when the carpenter comes home? Or, should I have a large bowl now and then another small bowl when the carpenter comes home? Will the carpenter realise that I fossicked most of the meat, leaving the meat to curry sauce ratio leaning slightly in the sauce direction? Maybe I should serve his bowl up now to make sure I leave some for him?
It was a food massacre. I was relentless - spoon after spoon of thick tomato sauce, broken by fork after fork of meat that fell apart at the seams. It was all over very quickly. A sticky brown bottomed pan is still the only reminder I have of the drama that unfolded on that day (and bloody annoying one at that).
The carpenter said it was one of the best meals I've ever cooked! The professor (who ate the small remainder of leftovers) said it was amazing, and with that I silently high fived retro Sheila right back to the 1970's. If this curry is an example of what curry was like back then, transport me there ... Um, NOW!
It's pretty straight forward to pull together - but to save time I think you could brown all the meat together and definitely add a lil olive oil when frying the curry powder. Definitely do not serve without the condiments! I know, I know. Banana seems a little crazy, but trust me this curry is the good kind of crazy.
