Great Makli Graveyard Thatta | The city of silence
Makli Graveyard is one of the largest and ancient graveyards in the world. Makli Necropolis is the place where funerary complexes, tombs, canopies, and graves of various sizes are built in a very attractive way. It’s rare for such a large number of graves to be built in one place. It is believed that the site has approximately 1 million graves. The tombs and graves were built during the periods of Samma, Arghun, Tarkhan, and Mughals, from the 14th to 18th centuries. Uncountable sultans, sheiks, saints, royals, historians, poets, martyrs, traitors, and people belonging to all religions and social statuses have been buried at this site. Some of the tombs were built by the rulers during their lifetime and later they were buried there. There are also many unmarked and unknown graves. There are many famous stories about his name. It is said that a pilgrim was going to perform Hajj when he stopped here. He found a spiritual feeling here and called this place “Makkah” for him. When the Sufi saint Sheikh Hammad Jamali hearing this story, he named this place “little Makkah or Makli”. The Makli Graveyards is spread over more than 10 km. It was declared as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1981. There are so many stories hidden in Makil’s graveyard. It is an indestructible pillar of our history and a priceless heritage.
