Today is the 142nd birthday of Dr Wu Lien-Teh, the man behind the modern surgical mask.

Here's a few things to know about the man:

He was born on the 10th of March, 1879, in Penang, British Malaya.

His mother was half Peranakan (Nyonya), a mixed culture of Chinese and local (Malay or native), and in Malaysia, are mostly settled in Melaka (Malacca), Penang and Kelantan.

He was the first person of Chinese descent to recieve an MD at the University of Cambridge.

He was vocally anti-opium. (Lin Zexu would be P R O U D)

During the pneumonic plague of Manchuria, he was sent to investigate and found out that the plague was spread through air, so he developed a new kind of mask by adding more layers of cotton and gauze to their surgical masks.

A French doctor who came to replace him refused to wear a mask. He died days after of the plague.

He ordered that the plague victims be cremated and patients be quarantined. Cases dropped significantly after that.

He chaired the International Plague Conference in 1911.

He was part of the advisory comitee for the League of Nations.

He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1935, the first ever Malayan to be nominated for a Nobel.

He died of a stroke in his home on the 21st of January 1960.

He was also a painter. Some of his paintings are in the Art Museum of the University of Malaya.

It is believed that the N95 mask was improved from the masks that Dr Wu made during the plague. Don't let him down.

It’s now official! Pakatan rise to the top!

Pakatan Harapan - which roughly translates to Coalition of Hope, consisting of approximately 4 different opposition parties united to bring down the ruling government that is Barisan Nasional, has done the impossible and cost Barisan Nasional the ruling seat in Parliament and the government of Malaysia. Our (now former) Prime Minister is the first Prime Minister in the history of this country that didn’t step down willingly and instead has been unseated by a landslide loss to the opposition.

Pakatan Harapan which is lead by our former Prime Minister, 92 year old Tun Dr. Mahathir - who once sat at the head of the Barisan Nasional party and will now become the first ever PM in this country to hold this position two times in his life time. One of the parties that makes up Pakatan is Parti Keadilan, which is lead by Tun Mahathir’s former Deputy Prime Mister, Anwar Ibrahim for a time during his run, who then became his biggest foe for years over a major drama that ended with him incarcerated. He’s still in jail and his wife is running the party in his stead.

Can you imagine? Two people on opposite sides, arguably each other’s biggest nemesis, putting aside their grievances to start a coalition party to topple the evil government? This is honestly like some dystopian novel shit, you can’t even make this up.

That isn’t even the end of it. Anwar’s wife, Wan Azizah, who I said is head of Parti Keadilan in his stead and as such, deputy of Pakatan Harapan, is also looking to become the very first woman Deputy Prime Minister this country has ever seen.

I never thought I’d be around to witness the downfall of Barisan Nasional. Malaysia always prides itself on being a democratic country, but the government’s understanding of democratic is: ‘democratic, as long as it’s Barisan.’ And to see them lose is such a spectacular fashion after years of fucking up the country and treating their citizens like crap, it’s honestly giving me chills. This is an event of historical proportions and I’m so very proud to have been just one small part of that.

I’m also very very proud in that the fact that my state and parliament seat that I voted for was won by Pakatan.

I honestly have chills right now.

Election Day in Malaysia today and a historical event is about to take place (or has already taken place perhaps if not for the actions of some very sore blue losers).

Today, the dwarves, elves and men became united against the evil that has festered in this country for far too long, bought too many over priced handbags and rings on the backs of the poor who live here.

Our former prime minister was in charge of the country for almost 20 years and the nation prospered while under him. Then this jackass and his puppet master wife stepped up and took a great big dump on everything he built, insulted his age and said that no one would vote for an old man with one foot in the grave.

The people begged to differ and the evident is in the votes.

This losing party in question has never in the history of this country not been the ruling party. This will indeed be an event of historical proportions and one I never thought I’d ever see in my lifetime.
