(Or: Remember the time when Alec punched a kid in Karate class for being such a pompous prick? Yes? Well, let's just say that it's the Lightwood-genes and Max has it too. #myheadcanon)

It would be a cold day in hell before Alec expected when what just happened, well, happened. Max bounded into the room in a rush, jacket billowing behind him. He bypassed Isabelle and even Alec, heading straight into Magnus’ legs and nearly throwing the warlock off balance on impact.

“Wo—oah!” Magnus swung his arms around. His legs were trapped in the circle of Max’s arms, wound tight around the back of his knees, rendering him immobile.

Alec moved fast, positioning himself behind his boyfriend, ready to catch if the pair topple over. He only got as far as placing a hand on Magnus’ shoulder before a cool rush of magic swept past him, pushing the warlock upright.

Behind them, Isabelle and Clary were watching in fascination.

“Oh, Alexander!” Magnus seemed surprised by the hand, like he hadn’t expected Alec to openly touch him in the middle of the Institute planning room. It said so on his face right before the façade of confidence came back into play. “Oh,Alexander,” he said in exaggeration, wiggling his eyebrows.

Magnus’s gaze drifted back to his mate. Alexander was deathly pale, sweating, and breathing uneven. His dark black hair clung to his face while his eyes twisted close. It pained him to see the love of his life be in so much pain. He wishes, oh how he wished, that he could take it all away.

“Oh, Alexander,” he murmured against Alec’s forehead, “You’re so brave. Doing so, so well, my love, for our pup. I love you so, so much, Alexander, don’t give up now.”

“M—Magnus,” Alec spoke weakly when he opened his eyes. The bluest of the blue glazed over with unshed tears. “It hurts,” he said in a small voice.

Magnus could cry. He knew that his Lightwood neither cried nor admitted to being in pain. His Alexander would rather walk all the way back to Brooklyn with a bone-deep werewolf gash on his thigh rather than ask for an Iratze from his sister or parabatai. To see, hear, and feel that pain in Alec’s system through their bonding bites made his stomach churn. He didn’t like causing Alexander pain.

Magnus’ breath hitched. It probably was the most handsome man that his cursed golden-green eyes had ever laid eyes on. For the first time, in a very long time, he was speechless and caught off-guard like a fool. He didn’t even know the guy’s name!

“Alexander.” Cecily answered the question for him, greeting the handsome gentleman with a smile. “Thank you. You’re indeed as charming as Gabriel said you were. I don’t believe that you’ve had the pleasure of meeting my brother, Will, and a friend of ours, Magnus Bane.”

Contrary to the earlier show of dominance, Alexander appeared somewhat-shy when shaking hands with Will and Magnus—perhaps more so with Magnus than Will. Magnus tried not to delve too much into that. Thankfully, Alexander didn’t seem to noticed Magnus’ internal monologue.

“Alexander Lightwood, Gabriel’s cousin, but please call me Alec,” he introduced himself. The handshake, perhaps in Magnus’ awestruck-mind, lasted a fraction longer than strictly necessary and that pinkish hue on Alec’s face was simply alcohol working its magic. When they parted, he presented the girl from earlier. “And this is my younger sister, Isabelle. You must forgive her rudeness. We come from a very… conservative household.”

Alexander Lightwood—booklover, nerd, and all-around good guy—stood with his back pressed against the gaudy floral wallpaper of the classic suburban house. He stuck out like a sore thumb. Party music blared through the colossal home-theatre surround-sound speaker in the living room, playing upbeat party music that was mostly EDM. Bodies piled everywhere, hot and heavy, spilling booze from their overflowing red cups.

“What are you going here, nerd?” a random male party-goer bumped into him with a splash. Beer covered a wide area on Alec’s dark grey shirt. He smelled it before it actually felt the coolness seep into the fabric. “Aren’t you supposed to be studying or something?”

“I was, uh, invited.”

“Oh yeah?” The guy challenged, eyeing Alec up and down with a sneer. It was clear what he thought of himself, and what he thought of Alec. He believed himself far too cool to even be socializing with the likes of a nerdy goody-goody toe-shoes. “Who invited you, huh?”

Magnus, for the life of him, never thought he’d ever have kids—not after Etta died, at least. He always thought that his notion of wanting children died when he buried her. It only solidified when he found himself with a very angelic, every inch a man, hunk of a Shadowhunter named Alexander. Having children seemed out of the question, but fate didn’t seem to see it that way.

Max’ baby monitor buzzed to life, and Max’s high-pitched wailing echoed their quiet bedroom. Beside him, Alec groaned and flopped back onto his stomach. It was two months after finding the abandoned warlock child. They both thought it was safer to raise him in their apartment in Brooklyn rather than risk the undue scrutiny of raining warlock in Shadowhunter territory.

Like this, both of their circles had access to the sweet little baby without a need to much fuss and unhealthy biases. Magnus warded up his entire building to protect against unwanted visitors and Alec spent an entire afternoon carving runes onto every entry way possible. That felt like eons ago.

Two months, and they still haven’t found the right work-life balance.

“Alexander, it’s your turn.” Magnus poked his boyfriend on the side, remember full-well that it was he who took care of little Max last night despite a full day of warlocking. He was tempted to spell the monitor silent but that could mean thatboth of them would fall asleep without addressing Max’s wailing.

Alec only groaned into the pillow in response.

It was D-day, date day, the day of their long-awaited ‘drinks’. Magnus padded back and forth his apartment with nervous energy buzzing through his veins. Of all the times that Alec had been here, this was the first time since the failed wedding. He had changed his outfit no less than ten times, wanting to impress without looking like he tried too hard.

The buzzer finally rang at a quarter past one.

Magnus barely held himself together when he went to answer the door. Chairman Meow curled his fluffy little tail around his ankle, bell jiggling as he moved. It was a testament to his tenseness that he didn’t hear the Chairman’s bell at all. He picked the small tabby by the scruff and cradled it in his arm.

The door swung open. His eyes met the most beautiful pair of blue orbs that he’s ever seen in his life, making his breath hitch and the words get stuck in his throat.

“Hi,” Alec greeted with a big wide smile, “I, uhm, I hope you don’t mind that, uh, Izzy volunteered to patrol with Jace but… but, uh…” his eyes flickered down, “…Max’s tutor got sick and he sent Max back to the Institute for the weekend. It’s been so long since I got a day off too. So, I kinda brought him along…?”

Malec Week Challenge: Day 7

Share a romantic headcanon So, anyone's who's followed me for at least the last month knows that I am in Buenos Aires, Argentina right now. I would like to say I chose BA after I read Lady Midnight, and yes, Alec and Magnus being in the city at some point in (fictional) time did factor into my decision. That being said, I am in love, in love, IN LOVE with the idea of Magnus taking Alec out to tango. You know Magnus knows how. There's no way he lived over a hundred years without learning, let alone 400+. And I know they had other things to do in Buenos Aires, but there's no way they were here and didn't go out dancing. I'm not saying Alec is very good right away, but the idea of Magnus teaching him the basics and leading him around on the dance floor is actually making me grin like an idiot. Oh, the feels.
