perpetua helping mama terzo dye her hair when she starts to gray. she tells her mama she looks good like that, but terzo doesn’t listen. she’s desperate to cling to what remains of her youth, and she refuses to allow this sign of aging to show. perpetua is sad, but she helps her anyway because she’s a good girl. besides, she loves playing with her mama’s hair, and this gives her an excuse to do so.

yes i can excuse the homophobia of a grown woman who grew up in a community where these beliefs were very pervasive but who worked extremely hard to unlearn all of that thrown suddenly completely out of her depth out of love for her son who absolutely made mistakes and absolutely said the wrong things and reacted in ways that were hurtful as a queer viewer but god do i see my own mother in her and yes i do draw the line at a gay teenager being annoying. hope this helps x
