She'd fallen asleep and he couldn't help but stare at her.

She didn't have to take care of him. She didn't need to love him the way she did. She didn't have to risk life and limb for him.

But she did.

Shippo curled closely to her, kissing her forehead, "I love you mama." His small hands tangled through her hair, "forever and ever." And just as sleep began to take hold of him, she wrapped him up in her arms.

"I love you too," she murmured sleepily, "forever and ever."

How was he so lucky to have her? Kagome thought the same of him.
