Everyone was leaving. Allison had tried to tell herself that she shouldn’t have been surprised, that she shouldn’t have hurt as much as she did over it but the reality of it was a harder pill to swallow. Their father was a monster, and a murderer now to boot. He’d lost two of them in a single fell swoop. And now he was going to lose the rest of them. But that meant that she was going to lose everyone too. And the world was a lonely place.
You can be in a room full of people and still feel utterly alone. Oh, how she knew that one well. It was the one rule of Hollywood. Perhaps that’s why she decided to wait in that room all night, the one that led out directly onto the street for an easy escape- the same one that they had all used to sneak to and from Griddy’s when they were kids. She could feel the familiar ache of loss coming on that night. All she had to do was wait and see who she would be losing next.
Allison looked over her shoulder, back at the dark and empty hallway. “I can’t just leave,” she whispered. “What about Luther? And Pogo? And Mom?” She gave him a hard, imploring look. You do remember Mom, don’t you?
Mom would be utterly devasted. If Allison was feeling the harsh burn of the family falling apart, she could only imagine what it would be like for her mother.
