Exhibition launched to commemorate the life and work of Darlington archaeologist Katherine Routledge

THE LIFE and work of a Darlington archaeologist who began the first excavations of Easter Island is the focus of an exhibition opening this weekend.

Katherine Routledge travelled to Easter Island as part of the Mana expedition in 1914 and spent time living amongst the natives, exploring and documenting their culture.

To mark the centenary year of the expedition, the Retracing Routledge exhibition at the Centre for Local Studies in Crown Street Library will be launched on Sunday, September 6. Read more.

I spy artist Benjamin Hope outside the Royal Geographical Society in London. Spent the afternoon researching the work of the Mana Expedition in the Foyle Reading Room. Fascinating stuff!

The Mana Expedition team found themselves in the middle of a conflict on Rapa Nui. The islanders wanted their land back, and a share of the cattle - but the company who owned the cattle, and managed the island would not co-operate. The Mana team were being hosted by the island's manager, Mr. Edmunds, but found they could see both sides of the story. How were they to behave in such a situation, and how could they ensure the expedition was not placed in jeopardy?? Angata, the village's prophetess seemed to hold the reins to the village actions - and was the person to talk to.
