Hibiscus fragilis or Mandrinette
The Mandrinette (Hibiscus fragilis) is an extremely rare and critically endangered endemic shrub known to exist only on the steep mountainous slopes of the Corps de Garde and Le Morne Brabant on Mauritius, apart from two further plants on Rodrigues. The Hibiscus fragilis is an evergreen plant bearing flowers 7-10 cm in diameter, with five bright pink to carmine red petals.
The Mandrinette looks rather similar to the Chinese Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis). The introduction of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis to Mauritius as a garden plant has spelt doom for the Hibiscus fragilis. There are only 46 mature individuals in the wild and these are not able to reproduce due to competition from the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and hybridization.
They are currently 200 plants in nurseries, and ex-situ conservation efforts are on to propagate this critically endangered and beautiful flowering plant. It remains to be seen if the reintroduction program of the ex-situ conserved species of H. fragilis into the wild, after the removal of the invading Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, is successful.
