I never imagined it would become a #shoujo that I would deeply enjoy since I'm not a huge fan of politics in #manga I read, but Koyou is wayyyy too fun (and funny!) to NOT read all her muscle-loving shenanigans! 😆

The Girl From The Other Side (vol.5) || review

Soooooo, it took me some time to read this volume and actually the simple reason is that my daily schedule didn’t provide time to grab a book / manga volume. However, overthinking this volume, I realized there was another reason why I didn’t have time to spare and read: I didn’t actively search for it! In conclusion I have to admit, I wasn’t drawn to continue as I’ve been in the previous volumes. And here’s why: the story’s pace.

Of course, with each volume learning more about the Insiders and especially the Outsiders, about Father and Mother and most importantly about Shiva herself, was the fuel which caught my interest running. Each volume shocked me in a new way and in contrast to the dark background, I enjoyed the fluff, Shiva’s and Teacher’s (also Auntie’s) happy time having tea parties and so. But now that I’ve read the fifth installment I yearn to learn more..., I mean really more! This time we hear about Father’s revelation which basically says Shiva must die...

But aside of that... I start to feel the pace is becoming too slow.

I can understand that this volume focused on Shiva’s emotions after Auntie’s death and her struggles to cope with it but also to question Teacher. Never before I’ve seen that always happy girl like that, outbursting. It hurt to see her so sad but at the same time it made her appear very authentic. When she and Teacher eventually made up, I was very relieved. I also understand Teacher’s struggles but even more interesting is how he slowly seems to start to understand what’s going on. Okay, not really. I think he’s my soulmate in this series as I feel as he does, just as not-privy and left out and always trying to understand, connect and comprehend. While reading I attempt to process the new revelations as good as possible but most of the workings are still in the dark to me. This is why I have high hopes for Teacher and for the upcoming volumes.

Aside of that, the newly turned Outsiders who now are after Shiva give the story a very welcome thrill, as they are immortal like Teacher (though who knows whether and when they’ll turn to trees like Auntie did?) and desperate to be able to return Inside to their families and friends.

I’ll see what volume 6 has in store but I hope it’s very much more. It would be great to get more explanation about that whole “soul”-focused thinking and why Shiva is so special. I doubt it’s some blessing from above but I think it’s somehow in her attitude and happiness. If I had to choose a term, I’d say, she’s not corrupted, that’s it. She makes no difference; she loves someone whether they are an Insider or an Outsider, no matter what. She’s not afraid of that darkness, evilness because she can’t agree, not having experienced anything bad from the Outside. And she sees the Good in everything. Luckily, Auntie taught her about thinking positively. Everyone should take Shiva’s attitude to heart! Not only the protagonists of this series!
