Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, did not show up on the first day of her corruption trial on Monday, saying through her lawyer that she was too unwell to attend court.

The prosecution on Monday rejected Rosmah’s call for an adjournment of the trial, saying it was an “attempt” to avoid coming to court.

Why waste waste? Local council launches initiative to recycle food waste into fertiliser

SANDAKAN, April 13, 2015:

Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) is the first local authority in Sabah to implement recycling programme that turns food waste into organic fertiliser.

This followed the opening of a recycling composting plant at a landfill site located at Batu 8, Jalan Sibuba Bypass, on April 1.

MPS assistant secretary (Operations) Mansor Mohd Kawi said that during the trial run, MPS had also carried out food waste segregation at source, involving restaurants, food manufacturing plants, school dormitories and government institutions, including hospitals and prisons.

The food waste from these premises were collected every day on a regular basis and sent to the recycling composting plant, he told Bernama here today.

He said MPS had also placed three special bins for organic waste disposal, including food waste, at the three main markets in the district, namely the Sandakan General Market, Kim Fung Market and Sibuga Batu 8 Market.

He said three food waste bins, each with a capacity of 500 litres, were also placed at Ikan Bakar Sim-Sim Market.

Mansor also said that during the trial run, food and organic waste sent to the plant weighed only about 50 to 60 tonnes per day, while the actual target was between 100 to 120 tonnes per day.

“Collection of waste in this district has reached 370 tonnes daily and 45% of the waste are food and organic waste,” he said, adding that the next target was to collect food waste from house to house, which would be implemented as soon as possible.

MIC presidential election to be held in May

PETALING JAYA Feb 18, 2015:

The MIC presidential elections will be held in May following a decision made by the Barisan Nasional leadership today.

In a statement issued by BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, the decision was among several that was taken following a meeting conducted between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Tengku Adnan, MIC president Datuk Seri G.Palanivel and deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam earlier.

“In the meeting it was agreed that the 2009 central working committee (CWC) members will be retained as per the directive of the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

“The MIC president will immediately call the 2009 CWC meeting to form an independent selection committee comprising of only MIC members for the purpose of party elections,” Tengku Adnan said.

He added according to the latest RoS directive, in addition to the MIC presidential election, polls involving branch levels would be held in April while MIC divisions, Wanita, Youth, Putera and Puteri wings would be held between April and June.

The elections for the post of deputy president, CWC and vice-presidents along with the Annual General Meeting will be held in July.

Today’s decision comes against the backdrop of chaos after an initial meeting on Feb 16 saw Palanivel absent, triggering Tengku Adnan to announce the proposal for a secretariat, comprising BN component parties, to be formed to run MIC pending fresh elections.

Dr Subramaniam had agreed to the secretariat being set up to act as a facilitator, with the 2009 MIC Central Working Committee running the actual re-election.

He also challenged Palanivel for the president’s post following the latter’s poor response to the party’s election crisis.

However, in an immediate response Palanivel had instructed his lawyers to file court papers against the RoS citing that other BN parties had no right to interfere in MIC’s affairs.

High drama at Nibong Tebal PKR polls

NIBONG TEBAL, June 23:

The boycotting and arguments which broke out at the Nibong Tebal PKR polls which ended early this morning, saw state legislative speaker Datuk Maktar Shapee’s losing badly.

In the results announced at 3am this morning, Maktar only received three votes, far behind PKR state leader Datuk Dr Mansor Othman, who garnered 358 votes.

The results, which were announced seven hours behind schedule, also saw another candidate, S. Sanjeeviramah, receiving 43 votes.

The re-election process, which was held at the Seri Ampangan JKKK Community hall, took on a dramatic twist with tension running high when heated exchange of words between supporters of those contesting almost came to throwing fists at each other.

Maktar, who is also the Sungai Bakap state assemblyman, had claimed that the re-election process did not abide by rules as he was only informed of the re-election date three days before compared with Mansor, whom he alleged was informed three weeks earlier.

Former deputy branch chief Mohd Kamil Abu Bakar also described Mansor’s victory as a victory that he could not be proud of.
