The lure of the Orient
Long before I could afford a ticket to China, or knew that the capital was Beijing, I discovered Hong Kong Kung Fu films.
Films of incredible heroes and evil villains. Movies that showed the triumph of good over evil and had no gun violence in them at all. Just good old fashioned fist to the face.
These movies were all usually set in ancient China. So with all the fighting you also got a glimpse into a culture much more intricate that Europe could offer. These were the stories of Knights and heroes that I was used to as a kid. A huge reader of Sir Walter Scott and with Ivanhoe as a personal idol, I was drawn to the Chinese heroes for the very same reasons I loved Robin Hood or Achilles.
I have many favourite Kung Fu movies. With all the romance and fighting that only HK cinema could provide from 1970 to the present. In all honesty romance is probably not a strong point, but the fighting is spectacular.
Master of the Flying Guillotine, Have Sword Will Travel, Snake in Eagle's Shadow, Meals on Wheels, 18 fatal strikes, Enter the 36 Chambers, just to name a few.
Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across a whole community on YouTube.com that uploaded full length classics.
Here are some Jems that I pass to you to be copied and stored on portable hard drives all across the world.
