How petty do you want to be?
So, 1958 Tour de France, nothing short of drama. But the drama started before the Tour even started, involving the French national team.
Their manager, Marcel Bidot, was struggling to pick his riders because Anquetil, Bobet and Géminiani were fucking petty bitches.
Anquetil, who was not on good terms with Bobet AT ALL, agreed to be on the same team as him but, "I'm not putting up with a coalition against me in my own team. So, it's Bobet or Géminiani, but not both."
Géminiani expected Bobet to stand by his side, but Bobet did not, and it was the end of their friendship. And who was to blame, Marcel Bidot, of course.
So Géminiani rode the Tour as captain of the Centre-Midi team, trying to get even.
As he was a favorite of the journalists he paraded a DONKEY around for all to see, who he called 'Marcel', announcing loudly to everyone, "because he is just like Bidot - stubborn and stupid."
When during the race the French team was attacking he would be yelling, "look everyone, the French team is attacking. They're attacking. Give them a big round of applause!"
Which he kept up for ALMOST THREE WEEKS.
He wore the yellow jersey that year for three days (stage 18-20) and when Gaul won stage 21 causing Géminiani to lose the jersey to Vito Favero he screamed, in a theatrical style, of which only he was capable of, that the French team were, "Judas. All Judas."
And Nobody Was Quite Sure Why?
