King Philippe and Queen Mathilde met with Dr. Denis Mukwege, the winner of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. In the lead up to International Women’s day. Dr. Mukwege is a gynecologist from the Democratic Republic of Congo who won his prize for his “effort to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.
On the first night in the new world, they had a barbecue. Everyone was invited, and Joe made sure to bring plates around to everyone who was too busy to drop by. It was a grab-and-go thing mostly, with so many people still in the early-game grind. But even so, it was nice. Hugs were exchanged, jokes were shared. And of course there was a deep underlying darkness, communicated only in meaningful glances.
Gem was standing with her plate of food, waiting for Impulse and Pearl so they could all walk back together. She could see them across the way, gathered with Grian, Scar, and Mumbo. Impulse gave each of the other guys big hugs, and Pearl gave each of their hands a squeeze. Impulse and Pearl headed back towards Gem, who waved them over.
The three walked back home in relative silence, and it wasn’t until they were sitting on the grass in their mess of community chests that Gem spoke up.
“So… how did you guys get away from the moon?”
Tango, who had sat down to steal Impulse’s food, suddenly muttered something about detailing his base and left. Pearl stabbed at her plate with her fork, and Impulse chuckled nervously.
“I mean, it doesn’t really matter… we’re all here safe and sound! And isn’t that most important?” Impulse said.
“Well, I mean, yes I’m glad we’re all here and well, but I mean that moon was crazy! I can’t believe we all got out of there! But I only know my story! Come on, I mean, what happened with you two? I mean, you guys were base buddies, aren’t you curious how the other escaped?” Gem leaned forward slightly to smile at them. They didn’t smile back. “I’ll tell you mine if you guys tell me yours! I mean mine is pretty simple, really, I just went through my special portal and ended up here! Just blinked and it was over!”
Pearl raised an eyebrow. “You just blinked and you were here? Like, you didn’t spend any time… in between?”
“No?” Gem replied, confused. “Did you? What do you even mean by in between?”
Impulse and Pearl looked at each other, clearly having some kind of silent conversation. They looked tired, looking at each other.
“Me and Pearl, as well as the rest of Boatem, escaped the moon together.” Impulse turned to look at Gem. Pearl looked down at the ground. “We went into the Boatem hole. Together.”
“And then you came here? Like you fell into the hole and came out the other side?” Gem asked. “That’s so cool!”
“Gem, we were free-falling in that hole for what felt like decades.” Pearl said, looking up at her. Her fork was through her plate. “A never-ending darkness and nothingness. We didn’t have the power to just blink and reappear on solid land. It was a living nightmare, okay? No time, no change, just falling for eternity.”
“We had each other, of course.” Impulse put a hand on Pearl’s shoulder to stop her. “It was a big comfort, naturally. But the never-ending falling and darkness… it started to take its toll.” His face fell, and for a second Gem was staring at two blank expressions. Impulse shook himself slightly and gripped Pearl’s shoulder tight. “I guess we all had different experiences getting out of here, huh?” He gave Gem a small smile. “Sorry to bring down the mood, Gem.”
“Yeah, sorry.” Pearl patted Impulse’s hand and gave Gem an apologetic grimace. “Sorry for snapping.”
“I’m sorry for bringing it up!” Gem said guiltily.
“You didn’t know.” Pearl said.
Impulse nodded in agreement. “I mean, we’re here now, so that’s all that matters, really.”
He was lying, they all knew that. But it kept the peace to think like that, and at the moment that’s all that mattered.

I promised so many people
Pieces of me that don't exist
And I'm starting to sink beneath the weight of their disappointment.
Would it help if I said I didn't mean it?
Do I know how to do anything but make everything worse?
So self-serving even in my own self-imposed attempts at misery.
I'm starting to think the things again that I promised myself I'd stay away from.
And I wonder if I'll ever let myself be content
When the world says I shouldn't.
Tell me, what do I deserve?
Tell me, is this it?
Is this what you wanted?
I'll give you what I can.
