I gained the knowledge today that making a font is hard. I'm rethinking designing the font for our book. Thoughts?
Also here are some thoughts on knowledge
The Source of All My Wisdom
Lets talk about knowledge! Wisdom. Enlightenment. Brain mojo! We have all been graced with the largest source of data and information man has ever seen. No, I’m not talking about myself. I’m talking of course about the internet, and while the internet has gifted mankind with such wonderful things as Trogdor, Rainbow kittens and a growing community of genius trolls the size of which the universe had never before seen, the most precious gift of all is knowledge. Granted, it’s knowledge buried in an endless landscape of double rainbows, rick rolls, and John Cena pranks, but it’s knowledge nonetheless, and with some amazing search engines we are equipped with very big shovels. So then, where does all this glorious tasty tasty knowledge hide online? Everywhere!
Any time you have a problem and you need a solution, I encourage you to ask numerous sources. Take no one man’s word as gospel. Especially on the internet. Once you’ve collected all the information you can, take a good look at your problem and make the decision as to which piece of advice you are going to use to solve it. If you are successful, then you now have a method to solve your problem. If you are not successful, then you now know one method of how NOT to solve your problem and already have leads for where to start next. I supposed limiting my answer to the internet is a bit…limiting. I figure you’re online right now and you’re reading a blog so you are probably already a fan of the web, but truth be told its not just the internet. It’s people. It’s TV, it’s radio, it’s movies, it’s real life experiments, it’s observations, it’s a gut feeling and it’s all worth noting. Gather facts, mentally filter facts, eat a cookie, attempt to solve your problem, rinse and repeat!
Even if you are successful in solving your problem, don’t disregard the rest of the information you’ve obtained, because you may find there are TWO ways of solving your problem. Now, when people ask you about how to solve the same problem you had, you can chew on the end of your glasses, raise an eyebrow, and with a smirk reply, “Well, my friend, there are multiple solutions for that problem.” And what’s best is that you will have the confidence of experience behind you. Now, that’s not to say you’re done gaining knowledge. Let’s say this person (let’s call him “Marcus, the most incredible person ever”… ok maybe “Bill”) Let’s say Bill takes your advice and doesn’t use it. Instead Bill finds his own solution. Make sure to keep in touch with Bill. Because anything worth learning once is worth learning in different ways that could potentially be better than the ways you learned before. If Bill is successful with his method, then you have just increased your brain lvl. If he is not then you now have an example of what didn’t work for someone you know. A failure for Bill still results in brain lvl up for you! Win Win.
Now, one of the most important lessons I can try to get across in my late night feverish internet rant is that when seeking knowledge and wisdom, try to think outside of the box. Try things that are out of your comfort zone and be fearless. What I mean by “think outside of the box” is be willing to throw out conventional wisdom. Conventional wisdom is old. Some of it is good, some of it is horrible. You won’t know which is which until you’ve exercised that grey noodle of yours and analyzed both conventional and new. I suppose what I mean to get across is never take anyone’s word for truth if it’s stopping you from doing something amazing. There are far more naysayers than there are encouragers in the world and they aren’t bad people. They just let conventional wisdom and the norm dictate their worlds. When you try to deviate from what they have established as knowledge they may self-consciously feel left behind. Unfortunately, some may never feel the urge to break out of what they’ve been told. You can be an exception. Because you’ve gained knowledge.
In most cases in life there isn’t a right or wrong answer. Even if there is, there are are often loop holes around those answers. If you think the answer is black and someone else thinks the answer is white, the truth may lie somewhere in the grey. Don’t be afraid to admit you were wrong. The more knowledge you gain, the more you will find you were wrong for a long time. You can easily stunt your ability to learn if you decide that you are right in the face of contradicting evidence. Even what I’m typing right now, to someone else may seem like total bullshit. If they can convince me of it I will likely change what I consider to be “true."
There’s more information in the universe than anyone person can ever understand. But you can try.
I’m getting close.
Maybe we should just use Garamond.
