listen. ALL marcus knows growing up is his family - but it’s just him and malistaire. and then some day these people show up and these are the people who, as far as he understands, took his mother from his family - and now they’re trying to take his father from him, so he hates them. what else is he supposed to do? and i think in his own way malistaire is a good father. i think he and cyrus are a lot more similar than we’re actually shown, because cyrus, well, we know he’s an asshole, but it is revealed that it’s only because he worries about alric. and malistaire - he loves deeply, and it’s this that makes him the way he ultimately is ingame, and he might not have the best perspective but he cares about marcus - probably doubly so because he lost alric to (again, to him) the people who made him lose his wife. he’s lost a wife and one son to the “good guys,” so the relationship he has with marcus is probably really convoluted but just. these people are marching around dragonspyre trying to stop malistaire and what is marcus supposed to do, really
anyway don’t think about malistaire’s family bc i’m just sad now
25. What are your wizard’s family like? How do they influence your wizard?
oh boy akfhjsfh this is a good one
Alric's adoptive family is the Mistrunner family, and they are very loving and wonderful! He's got an older sister, taryn, who's the top of her class in divination and very proud of it. He sometimes feels a little worried, being so obviously the "slacker" of such an accomplished family - as well as the only conjurer in a family of notoriously strong diviners - but his parents never place any crazy expectations on him and support him regardless :)
There is, of course, the matter of his Drake lineage when Marcus is discovered and Malistaire is defeated the first time, and that complicates things, but we don't have time to unpack ALL of that. he cares about his brother a lot but isn't really sure how to go about it. after Marcus is brought back into Ravenwood he's temporarily adopted by the Mistrunners and taken care of with no strings attached uwu

The hall outside the headmaster’s office was brightly lit. Marcus frowned at his hands, still shaking slightly; his forearms felt numb. An effect of the magic, he knew. The door across from him opened, and he squinted up at the person walking toward him.
“You can’t keep doing this,” Alric said, sitting heavily beside him. Marcus glared at him, but he didn’t even turn to look. Instead he just sat with his hands in the pockets of his coat, stretching his legs out in front of him. Marcus sighed and looked down again.
“I’m serious, you know,” Alric said, and this time he was looking at Marcus. “You’re gonna seriously hurt yourself.”
“And why should you care?” Marcus snapped. “Don’t say what I think you’re gonna say. I’m not your brother.”
“Okay,” Alric said. Marcus tensed. “But I don’t want you to get hurt. Your face is black and blue,” Alric continued, and out of the corner of his eye Marcus saw his hand reaching toward his face, where he knew he had two black eyes.
Marcus snatched Alric’s hand out of the air - or he would have, if a burning pain hadn’t shot up his arm as he did so. He doubled over, clutching his hands to his abdomen, teeth clenched. He felt Alric’s hand land on his shoulder, but couldn’t bring himself to move it through the pain now pulsing up to his shoulders.
Faintly he heard Alric say, “I’d tell you I told you so, but I like my hair being on my head. Here.” A moment and a small sigil later, Life magic was gently easing the pain out of Marcus’s extremities. He risked a glance at Alric, who was back to sitting straight, staring ahead of him.
“Thanks,” Marcus muttered.
“Don’t mention it. But listen, I don’t know what you learned, but this is why you shouldn’t keep casting without a focus. I’ll get you a wand, if you want. Until you can have your sword back,” Alric trailed off, rubbing the back of his head.
“Um,” Marcus said. Then he frowned. “No, of course not. I’m fine, stupid.” Alric just sighed.
The door beside them opened, and the headmaster’s voice called them in. “Come on, stupid,” Alric said, and led him inside.
