“Yep,” Nathan replied with a frown. “But Van cleared my name and the rest is history.” The red haired toddler walked over to the girl who was crying in the corner and tilted her head. “Oh, can you help me? Once she calms down we can talk better.”
“Right,” Samara said. She walked over to the girls and crouched onto the floor by them. “Hi, my name is Samara. What’s yours?”
“Kennedy,” The red haired girl replied. She was more well adjusted than the other girl. Perhaps because she was here much longer? It broke Samara’s heart to think these girls had been taken from their families. “She Marcy!”
“Kennedy and Marcy,” Samara said. “Wow, very pretty names for very pretty girls. Are you girls scared?” Marcy sniffled and nodded her head. “Do you miss your mom?”
“Yes,” Marcy said through bubbled sobs. “I want my mommy!”
“Your mommy is coming to get you,” Samara reassured the girl. She hoped this was true. “But until then do you think you can hang out with me and Mr.Nathan?” The girl looked hesitant. “What if I sing you a song?” Samara moved closer to Marcy and began to hum Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
From the corner of her eye Samara could see Nathan watching her with curiosity. It seemed they were both in a tough predicament. Perhaps if they worked together, there’d be a way to end it. For now though, her top priority was making sure these girls were safe.
