PHOTOS: Fil-Am, US progressives held a protest in Times Square, New York City last July 31 in condemnation of the Indo-Pacific tour of U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

This, according to the groups, is an obvious effort from the US to add fuel to the tension in the region as China continues to threaten its position as the global superpower. Protesters fear that the Philippines might become the 'next Ukraine' as the US grants $500 million to the country for military aid amid the tension in the West Philippine Sea. Peace-loving Filipinos and Americans call for an end the United States' war provocations in different parts of the world.

LOOK | Small fishers defy Beijing: Collective 'fishing expedition' launched to challenge China's fishing ban

In a bold move to assert the Philippines' sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea, over 20 small fishing boats from the Panatag Fisherfolk Association, a local affiliate of PAMALAKAYA in Zambales, set sail from Masinloc earlier today.

They are set to venture 20-30 nautical miles off Masinloc town towards the disputed waters, challenging China's announced four-month fishing ban.

"There is no better way to assert fishing rights in our exclusive economic zone than to conduct a collective economic activity,” said Ronnel Arambulo, PAMALAKAYA National Vice Chairperson.

Filipino-American activists protested Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s visit to the United States for the first trilateral U.S.-Japan-Philippines leaders’ summit on April 11.

In a statement, Brittany Tabora of Anakbayan-DC and Bayan-DMV said that it is critical for Filipinos around the world to know that Filipinos in the US do not stand for Marcos.

For the progressive groups, the trilateral summit is among the series of efforts to leverage the Philippines’ strategic geo-political location for economic and military benefit as tensions rise between the U.S. and China, “at the expense of the sovereignty of the Philippines, the economic conditions of Filipino workers, and the health of the environment.”

"We’re here bringing the voices of the Filipino people to oppose the trilateral summit that’s happening around the US, Philippines and Japan. The US government talks about bringing economic growth, prosperity, clean energy and peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. But we know this is a guise for more war and militarism in the Asia Pacific region and also an opportunity to perpetuate unequal economic and military agreements,” said Julie Jamora of Malaya Movement USA.

Philstar: Foreign military 'intervention' warned in upcoming West Philippine Sea naval drill

A progressive fisherfolk group warned that the upcoming Philippines-Japan-Australia-US joint naval drills could increase tensions in the West Philippine Sea at the "further expense" of Filipino fisherfolk.

"It is the Filipino fisherfolk all over again who will bear the brunt of China’s retaliation against these provocative naval drills with other countries," said PAMALAKAYA national chairperson Fernando Hicap on Saturday.

"It has been proven that foreign military exercises did not dispel Chinese Coast Guard vessels from our territorial waters. On the contrary, Chinese forces have increased rapidly in response to the successive joint maritime exercises conducted by the Philippines and the US," he added.

"So why does the Marcos Jr. administration keep on joining military exercises with other countries in our seas?"

While PAMALAKAYA understands that the Philippines needs support from the international community to pressure China to leave Manila's territorial waters, Hicap said that the country needs to be wary of other superpowers that take advantage of the dispute in advancing their economic and geopolitical interests.

Beijing continues to maintain its presence within the West Philippine Sea even after the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016 invalidated the former's claim to almost the entire South China Sea.

The group said that they would continue to assert that the Philippines should stand on its own feet at fight for its national sovereignty peacefully and diplomatically using international laws that recognizes its EEZ.

Kabataan Partylist warns against Senate railroading of Mandatory ROTC amid US-China showdown in WPS

Kabataan Partylist raises alarm over sudden rush of the Senate leadership to pass the proposed Mandatory ROTC Bill by the end of May.

This is despite significant disunity among senators in previous deliberations and the lack of formidable public clamor from primary stakeholders and civil society in general.

Notably, such commitment by the Senate to railroad Mandatory ROTC coincides with the escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea since the past month.

“Sana hindi gamitin ang isyu ng girian ng Tsina at US sa ating karagatan para isagasa ang pagpasa sa Mandatory ROTC. Nais nating ihanda ang mga kabataan na magmahal at maglingkod sa bayan, hindi sa gera ng dayuhan,” says Kabataan Partylist Rep. Raoul Manuel.

“Kung makakaladkad ang Pilipinas sa giyera ng US at Tsina, makikinabang lamang ang US sa milyun-milyong kabataan na magiging reserbang hukbo sa gera nito laban sa Tsina,” adds Manuel.

“Magsimula muna tayo sa pagtugon sa krisis sa edukasyon. Paano matututo ang mga kabataan na piliin at ipagtanggol ang Pilipinas kung di nila alam ang kasaysayan at Konstitusyon? Philippine Constitution and history ang dapat gawing mandatory sa kolehiyo at hayskul, hindi Mandatory ROTC,” ends Manuel.
