Sound Advice
Before you start a song, ask yourself WWRD (What Would Rob Do?). Then play at 20-30 bpm faster than your answer.
-Rob
I've been working on my set, rehearsing, and driving myself nuts. Rob, he of the slowest damn song I've ever heard, offered sage-like advice.
Come see me play the Songwriter's Showcase in Damascus, MD this Saturday Night. And if you do, remind me, WWRD?

Songwriter's Showcase with Mark Dabney!
Hi everyone!
In the Maryland area and interested in seeing half of The Really Good Pot Roast live? Here's your chance! I (Mark) am playing a Songwriter's Showcase in Damascus, MD on November 3rd!
Come join me at The Music Cafe for an evening of performances by local songwriters (including me!) and hosted by Ferrante & Dillon! The Music Cafe is a great coffee house with delicious food. And of course, live music!
The show is from 7pm-10pm. I'm playing the opening slot from 7-7:30, then will join the rest of the local artists for a jam at the end. I'll be playing almost all originals, and mayhaps a cover I've been kicking around...
The Details:
The Music Cafe 26528-B Ridge Road Damascus, MD 20872 (301) 253-1500
Aside from a couple open mic nights, this will be my first show in years. Should be fun (and in no way phenomenally nerve-racking and intimidating)!

Mark Dabney - Hit Me Baby One More Time
Britney Spears cover
Every once and a while, one of us will send the over an song we've recorded with no details attached other than a brief message to the effect of, "This happened today. Thought I'd share it with you." Sometimes these songs are original tunes with odd lyrics or music, other times they're interesting cover choices. Today Mark sent me a cover song. This is the entire email message he attached (The MP3 was unlabeled, but I'm including the song title to grab your attention as you scroll through your dashboard):
I recorded a song. This is the last time I touch this thing. The idea got in my head while I paced around the house my guitar in hand. I found I had a fair idea of the chords, but looked them up, along with the lyrics. But I decided to record it anyway. What you hear is the first time I played through the song in it's entirety. I'm being cagey with the title because, well... just listen. This isn't for 50/90, certainly. This just kinda happened because it amused me. I'm sharing it with you because (1) I thought I'd share (2) you might laugh, (3) I'm an idiot. Enjoy.
I enjoyed it so much I'm sharing it with you fine folks. Mark doesn't know I'm posting this to the band blog, but he will in a few seconds...
MARK'S EDIT: Well, I clearly know now. Well played, sir. Well played.
If You Were Looking by Michael Gutierrez-May (with Mark Dabney)
During FAWM 2012 this year, I collaborated with Michael Gutierrez-May, a Massachusetts based musician and songwriter. We were paired randomly as part of a FAWM challenge, each of us putting our names in a virtual hat and winding up together. A day or two later, Michael had lyrics together and sent them my way for music. They're so uplifting, which is way different than the death, doom, and gloom I normally write. I spent a couple days trying a few different approaches, and finally worked this out version out. This was recorded on February 17th. It's a driving 2 acoustic guitar track with a melodica. Yep. Melodica.
Michael put this up on Jango radio under Michael Gutierrez-May.
He recently told me he put together this video for the song, which is rad as hell.
Check out Michael's other music here: http://www.mgutierrezmay.com/
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.
